How to pass a probation period at new job

WheelWorks · 08/01/2024 23:52

Starting a software engineer role with my local police force this month after vetting is completed. There will be a 6 month probation period, I am planning to do some upskilling before hand. What else can I do to ensure I pass the probation period?

Don't take any days off/sick leave... Basically be at the beck and call... Once you got a permeant offer.. ease off

Google "shepard's prayer" (as in Alan Shepard the astronaut).

Build rapport with your colleagues, be open friendly but always professional.

be early for everything, no excuses.

no time off sick.

Buy a notebook, write stuff down, don't leave it to memory.

add reminders into your Outlook so you don't forget things.

check in with your delivery manager and make sure you know you're heading in the right direction, show them you mean business!

Is there a particular reason for asking this? In my experience, I can only think of one or two people who have been let go of during their probation period and half a dozen who have had it extended. In previous roles, what aspects have you struggled with.
My tips would be:

  • understand the culture around arriving & leaving (by which I mean does an 8.30 am start mean arrive at 8.15 so you're properly working at 8.30, arrive at 8.25 so you're logging on at 8.30 or arrive at 8.32 and drift around making a cup of tea & chatting to colleagues. Even if it is the last of these, be at least the one in the middle). Same around lunchtime
  • try to minimise your absence. If your sick, you're sick but if you need any routine things like dental check up or your car being serviced, try and sort it before you start
  • for the first couple of weeks, watch, listen and learn. Try and understand the different personalities and dynamics of the office
  • be competent at your job. If you don't know how to do something, say so and aak for help. And do this in a way which means there is time to help. Don't just sit on it and hope it will go away
