Hi

i started a new job 5 months ago In a care home, I’ve got 9 years care experience but changed homes after moving house and needing somewhere closer.
a new manager started 2 months after me and to put it as nicely as I can, she is an absolute cow.
she shouts and swears at staff, she swears at residents (which has been reported and to my knowledge nothing been done or said) she slags staff off to other staff members she’s even been caught slagging staff off to residents. shes told staff they ‘look like a bag of shit’ because their uniform was too big. shes targeted me from day one and other staff members have all pointed it out, she’s ather been rude to me or she completely ignores me when I talk to her. She’s threatened to fail my probation because two residents refused to go out and I should have ‘forced’ them, her words not mine. I’ve reported her to the regional manager and nothing done to my knowledge.
but the icing on the cake.. I was involved in an incident with a resident last week but after all the shit off this manager it really pushed me over the edge, I asked if I could go home and take a couple of days off (I have had severe mental health in the past which I declared In my interview) this was approved by another manager who also said to take a full week self cert if needed. I was off Thursday and Friday and in that time made sure I kept in contact with work letting them know how I was getting on and when I’d be back. Came back today had my return to work with this cow manager, asked if I could take somebody in with me (cos everytime I’m on my own with her that’s when she’s horrible) and she told me I wasn’t allowed. She told me that I needed a note from a doctor to say I can come back to work which I said was fine, she said ‘anybody can say they’ve got mental health it doesn’t mean they do’, then she told me she’s reporting me to HR for been off with mental health. She accused me of breaking personal boundaries with residents which is far from true. Then when I was speaking she told me to ‘hurry up’ because she had an interview scheduled. She also told me to stop going to other staff members with my issues and go to her.

ive been told to report her for bullying but I don’t see the point when nothing got done the first time, I’m looking for a new job as we speak but in the mean time what can I do to make life more bareable? Thanks for reading to the end if you got that far!

She sounds just like a manager I had in a care home many years ago. Seemed to get a kick out of making my life miserable. I started keeping a record of any incidents and I told her that I was doing that.

Have you reported her inappropriate behaviour to the local safeguarding team? This number will be found on the local council website the home is located within.

ACASS may be a good organisation to have a call with? Good luck with it, her life is probably super miserable and shit outside of work so she is just reflecting that in her work persona. Doesn’t make it ok or appropriate though x

Is she a registered nurse or social worker, you can report her to their governing bodies and also report to the cqc, the police if she is abusing residents and adult social services, keep a record of her abuse, particularly with residents, is there a deputy manager.

You've gone to the regional manager and nothing has changed. That's a very clear message. You can do as others have suggested and report her to various bodies. The employer will back her, you have no evidence to support the allegations, and it could rebound on you very badly. Sorry, there are just so many bad employers and managers in this sector, and the evidence suggests that the "little people" are the ones who suffer when it comes to such things. With only 5 months employment you have almost no employment rights, probation is a red herring, and you can be sacked for almost anything in the first 2 years.

The only silver lining I see is that good care staff are in massive demand. Get another job or sign up with an agency for now (that can be a good way of testing out places with little commitment).

I would get out now and go elsewhere as this won't end well. I'd report the abuse to residents. And if you were feeling brave I'd also try filming it eg through audio recording. The abuse of residents. Safeguarding should have been followed for resident abuse which shows the organisation is toxic
