Flexi time for medical appointment?

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 08/01/2024 12:51

I have been asked to use flexi time to cover a medical appointment. Are my employers allowed to do this? I thought they had to give you time off to attend?

Thank you

It depends on the wording of your contract - in England it's time off for medical appointments but not necessarily paid.

Unless it’s pregnancy related then no, you’re not entitled to time off and using flexi time is completely reasonable. I once worked for a place that if you were going to be half an hour late you had to book half a days holiday!

🤷🏻‍♀️ what's the problem with using your flexi time?
Unless it's pregnancy or a disability that is noted in your contract as reasonable adjustment, than you should make time up or have it unpaid.

SquashPenguin · 08/01/2024 13:04

They can let you have the time off, they just don’t have to pay you. Flexi is a great way to make up the difference.

It depends on your employer - some are more reasonable/flexible than others and there’s no legal requirement for them to give you the paid time off. I will let my team attend appointments without requiring them to make up the time because that’s life, but ask them to make them first thing or last thing whenever possible so the time off is minimal. If they can’t then I ask them to work at a base closest to their appointment so again the time off is minimal. If they work p/t then I ask them to make them for a day they’re not working, again when possible. It’s at my discretion though, and know other managers who insist on the time being made up (and conversely others who have similar rules to mine or who are more flexible). My team don’t take the p, so I’m happy to come and go with them.

If you have a flexi scheme but it seems reasonable for you to mark it on the timesheet. That's the whole purpose.

AllIsWellish · 08/01/2024 13:09

It depends who you work for I get time off paid where I am for dr/hospital appointments but had to use flexi time for an emergency dental appointment

AyeRightYeAre · 08/01/2024 13:09

Paid time off is only a right for maternity appointments.

Otherwise it's up your the employer.

This is really interesting. Thanks for all your comments. I have always just given my team the time off with no expectation to use flexi or make it back up. Will put flexi in for it, thanks all

at my work we get time off for medical appts. this includes dr/hospital/dentist and opticians. We dont have to make the time up. I'm not sure what the deal would be if someone had a lot of them or took the piss.

Neriah · 08/01/2024 15:21

We give time off with pay for hospital or emergency appointments; and for opticians if you work with screens. But routine appointments must be made up with flexi.
