Did you ever ask for payrise

How did it go?

Yes.
Pretty much every single year in every job prior to my current one.

My current pay is based on an algorithm so non negotiable.

If I didn't get what I wanted I went to market and got an new job. My employer would generally match it and I'd stay or if I liked the new company I'd move.
In my last role I'd advise on my expectation 3months prior year end and my boss knew if it wasn't met I'd leave (I was his no 2 and invaluable to the department). That worked fine for 6 years then I was headhunted.

If I didn't get one annually then I've asked.

I've always had a pay rise I asked for.

TheQueenMakersDaughter · 07/01/2024 00:23

I usually haven't needed to ask, but I don't know how representative that is in corporate settings as a whole.

NuffSaidSam · 07/01/2024 00:24

More or less every year (unless offered). I've never been denied a rise, but have been negotiated down (but I always aim high to allow for wriggle room). Don't ask, don't get.

In academic related work we have a scheme where we can request an incremental increase based on work over the year. We are encouraged to consider it by the head of department.

Yes. At first they said no so I threatened to leave and they gave it to me. Did that twice in the same job then did actually get sick of having to ask and left!

icallitasplodge · 07/01/2024 00:31

All the time.

In one role where I was friendlier with the managers, various “I don’t get paid enough for this and you know it” comments for a few months when new tasks were passed my way, followed by breaking down all the elements of my job I did which were new. That got me a pay rise.

then when I found a new role, they suddenly had another £5k to offer me.

in other roles there are processes to follow and I’ve never been told no.

AyeRightYeAre · 07/01/2024 00:33

A few years ago I recognised I was seriously undervalued in my job.

I asked for a £10k pay rise. This is how much I knew it would cost to recruit my replacement.

I offered to commit to staying for 2 years if they paid this.

They didn't so I looked for a new job. Within a few months I had one paying £35k more.

In the last 2 years pay rises mean i now earn £45k more than my last job.

Most places I’ve worked have been pretty good at doing it automatically. Last one said no one too many times and wondered why I (and others) left.

We have a strange situation as the union tells us they do not get anyone pay rises. But we have seen paperwork where they get the hourly pay staff pay rises.
I am salaried and since 2018 the warehouse have had 28 percent rise the salaried staff have had 7 percent in that same time. We raised a grievance and got nothing.
