A career in finance

I’ve had lots jobs and lots of career breaks due to being a sahm, relocating, covid etc.

After a long career break, I’ve just completed a Christmas retail temp job, and I am now looking for a new job. I’m mid 40s and I am looking to gain a qualification so that I can settle into a ‘career’ rather than jump from job to job with no real prospects.

I have 5 years experience in NHS payroll, but I was made redundant due to the service being outsourced else where. I’m having trouble applying for payroll jobs, as most require SAGE and advanced excel experience etc, which I do not have as the NHS uses their own computer software system.

I am looking in the finance sector, possibly remain in payroll, book keeping or accounting. I would love a wfh job, but I’m also worried about jobs being outsourced (like my previous role) or taken over by AI etc.

so, my choice is to continue applying for payroll jobs, look for an accountancy apprenticeship or do a book keeping course.

Any advice on payroll, book keeping or accountancy welcome, thanks.

I work in Finance. Without advanced excel / power bi / sage or another system’s experience you won’t get a foot through the door. You will need to upskill and be prepared to put up projects on GitHub (and link them in your CV) so managers can see the quality of your work. Once you’ve done this aim for short term contracts (up to 3 mths) to gain experience and build a network
