As the title. I like HR but the next step up is 'Head of' which I don't want to go for.
Would like to earn more too.
I am people focused with keen eye for detail. Good at building relationships and getting things done.
What can I do instead?

Project management in tech pays well. You'd need to get a project management certification of some sort and be able to show a track record of managing big projects to delivery. Compliance would be another option.

Following, as I work in an office in management within FE, but looking for something new also.

What about Organisational Development? Part of HR function in NHS. Lots of projects and attention to detail working on developing culture and competency etc

changefromhr · 26/12/2023 07:50

I forgot to mention, part of what I like about HR is resolving problems and finding solutions, and seeing people grow and gain confidence through their work. I also have a Coaching and Mentoring qualification.
But I want to move away because it doesn't pay that pay well (at this level) but more so because I don't like doing the 'dirty' aspects of HR: having to champion any of the Executive Team's harebrained ideas that you're unconvinced about, giving people bad news, restructures and redundancies. I've been quite lucky I've not had to do much of this because I've worked for a good organisation but it's another reason why I'm not wishing to stay in HR as I know some other organisations can be rife with it.

Are you in HR Ninjas on Facebook? This discussion comes up quite often on there.

Second organisational development (OD) as an option.

Developing and delivering staff health and well-being programmes might also be something to
look at - lots of roles in the NHS and education at the moment - and I personally know of several HR people in these roles.

SylvieLaufeydottir · 26/12/2023 09:24

OD is definitely not somewhere to be if you don't like doing redundancies and re-orgs.

SausageCasseroles · 26/12/2023 09:27

Nhs and education? What sort of roles? There was a couple I saw (in delivery) but wanted qualifications as OT/SW/mhn. Or basic admin.

Sisterpita · 26/12/2023 09:28

Have you considered HR Consultancy?

Whatliesbeneath707 · 26/12/2023 14:17

@changefromhr please may I ask how you did your coaching & mentoring qualification (which organisation/course did you do it through)? Did you rate the training?

Have you considered HR in a university? Their roles seem quite diverse without the pressure of lots of redundancies (well so far, although this might change in the coming years).
