P45 panic!

Can anyone help, please?

I left a job at the end of June and have my P45.

I then started a new job in October but knew straightaway that I'd made a massive mistake and left after 2 days. The company paid me (£400) and issued a P45 although I hadn't earnt enough to pay any tax.

I have now accepted another role and start at the beginning of January. However, as I didn't put the 2 day job on my CV I realise I've created a P45 problem for myself.

Can I give my June P45 to my new employer or will that cause problems with HMRC as it would be the same P45 that I gave to the 2 day job in October. Or, should I just complete a New Starter Checklist?

I'm just worried about paying too much tax.

Thanks

You need to give your new employer your most recent P45. It doesn't matter how many jobs you have in the year, it's your cumulative earnings between April and April each year that HMRC look at and tax you on.

HMRC don't give two hoots about your CV, it's totally separate from a P45.

Just give them it. I doubt they would query it but if they do its completely reasonable that you decided that role wasn't for you quickly. You worked a couple of days - totally understandable why you would omit this info

You can complete a P46 instead and just tick the box that applies, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Lots of people start work without a p45 as companies can sometimes take a while to issue them, the p46 will be OK 👍

P46 no longer exists, it’s the new starter checklist. If you really don’t want to give your new employer the latest P45 then you can complete the checklist instead. Keep an eye on your tax and ring HMRC if it looks like there’s an issue (takes ages to get through but they’re helpful once you do).

Itsmypartyparty - thank you, I keep calling it a p46! Thank you 😀

Thanks everyone, I'll complete a new starter form.
