Is it possible to succeed in a senior job you aren't suited to, that you don't enjoy at all or have any interest in?

I feel like I'm being set up to fail. I'm being moved into a role not because my experience or skills are a good match, but because the business needs someone in the role and there isn't anyone else.

I've worked for a long time. I'm experienced and good at what I do. Now I'm being asked to do a job outside my area of interest and expertise that doesn't offer any of the responsibilities I most enjoy and would consider to be non-negotiable if I was applying for jobs. It isn't a role I would have sought out.

If leaving isn't an option, how do you suggest I handle it?

Yes. Perhaps temporarily. And I'd want a lot of convenience cash.

I agree that if I'm going to have to do it, the money has to be right. It's just so short sighted of those pushing me into the move as it's not a role in which I could thrive compared to other roles. There's also a significant risk in taking me away from my current role that I don't believe they have properly considered.

I would rather be in a job I could succeed in long term rather than temporarily.
