Long service notice period.

Next year I would have done 20 years with my current employer. I plan to leave soon after this, as I will be moving. When I reach this milestone with the company I will receive a 50% discount which will be valid even after I leave. Now my question is as I have to give 12 weeks notice would I have to wait until I’ve actually got to the 20 year date to hand my notice in then work the 12 weeks notice or could I hand in my notice 12 weeks before so I leave shortly after the 20 year date. I don’t want to risk loosing the discount as this is a very valuable thing to get.

If you haven't a copy filed you can ask for one

It will depend on how it's worded in your contract. Lots of places will remove certain privileges during notice period, eg more than statutory notice etc.

Yeah there’s nothing on the contract. I’m worried this will the case if I don’t wait until after the actual 20 years before handing in my notice

You could take it to a solicitor for a view on where you stand or can you hand in your 12 week notice the day of your 20 year anniversary or the day after to be on the safe side?

At a guess the long service award deliberately isn't in your contract because they don't want it to be a contractual entitlement that you could try and enforce through a solicitor.

Generally, I would expect people serving their notice period to be excluded from things like long service awards.

If it's worth that much to you, for the sake of 12 weeks after 20 years, wait.

I suspect it'll be a policy that stipulates the rules around this rather than contract, I doubt it is contractually guaranteed. If in doubt and unable to ask I would definitely err on the side of caution and wait until you had completed 20 years.

I also think it's likley to be policy, and policy can be changed. So there are no guarantees that the policy will remain the same for ever.

Never thought of this thank you. From peoples opinions I’m definitely going to wait until I’ve got to the 20 year date then work my 12 weeks notice
