How to ask / should I ask for a payrise?

I’m a senior manager in a small company. Have worked here for ten years. I manage a department which comprises four teams. Direct line manager of ten, but have 28 staff in my dept.

My manager is the CEO - and my role is to run the daily operations and client facing side of the company.

I am paid quite well. However… I want a payrise. How do I ask for one and am I being cheeky?

some stuff I’m considering mentioning at appraisal (but don’t know if I should)

1 I am paid considerably less than two of my subordinates (both men) - they have technical skills I don’t, and are older, but don’t have anywhere near the management responsibility I have, nor have they worked for the company as long as I have.

2 I have lost a support team member this year and haven’t been allowed to backfill as we haven’t been as profitable as we wanted (still making almost £1m profit). I’ve taken on about 50% of the additional admin from this

3 I’ve covered some tasks of another department head who is on mat leave

4 My own workload has been much more challenging this year with a record number of client complaints to deal with

5 My mortgage just went up 30% a month!

I have never asked for a payrise before, but I really feel like I deserve one. Any advice would be really welcome.

Don't mention 5!!!
All the rest are perfectly valid reasons to ask, have an amount in mind and also a plan on what to say/do if it's a straight 'no'.

Agree with @toomuchfaster - state your case as you have here, minus the mortgage increase and give them a number. Don't sell yourself short.

These are all broadly irrelevant. When was the last time you got a pay rise and are you paid the market rate for your job?

Ask. A man would.

Do you have annual pay review?

I have had standard rises each year of a few % (inflation based except last year which was under inflation) which the company as a whole gets, with people in technical roles getting additional increases when they get professional qualifications. My role isn’t technical, and doesn’t have a training path so these don’t apply to me. I’ve found a wide range of salaries for similar roles. I’d say I’m in the middle of the range.

Go in with points 2-4 and good luck!
