EMHP training year as a parent

Hello,

Wondered if anyone would be able to share their experiences of the EMHP training year as a parent? I have three children (primary age x2 and one toddler). Would obviously have childcare sorted and have family to help in emergencies.

I feel OK about the workload (have done a PGCE/MA) but would be so helpful to hear from other parents how they found the year? Was it stressful but generally manageable or a total disaster?

In addition, where are you at now? Have you stayed as a EMHP? Do you enjoy the role?

Any experiences, good and bad, very welcome!

Thanks so much in advance!

Hi!

I am a Trainee EMHP, I have a 4-year-old and I am currently pregnant with my second. I am due to submit everything next month (fingers crossed).

I won't lie to you it is stressful, there is a lot of work to complete within a short time frame, also working full time and managing your caseload etc. (I have also had to try and manage pregnancy hormones in the most stressful part of the course lol!)

I love the role but not the training (or the university I am with) but I am very very LUCKY that the service I am in placed in is sooooo supportive I have said many times if it was not for them I probably wouldn't be in the course any longer. (I hope that doesn't scare you that I have said that!)

Before I began my training I was a stay-at-home mum and I have experienced a lot of mum guilt during this course as my weekends are taken up by uni work but I have to remind myself it is only for a year, I explain this to my DD and I make sure I spend some quality time with her on the weekends (the week is so busy for her being at school and me being at work).

All I would say is, it can be rubbish at times, not the role itself but just managing everything alongside it. Make sure you have supportive people around you and be honest with your managers/supervisors. This has helped me, thankfully they have been through the same training so they are very understanding

Hope that kind of helps and hasn't scared you and honestly the role is brilliant its just the training year, but it is a YEAR! 😁

Ah thanks so much for replying and congratulations on your pregnancy, well done for nearly finishing, sounds like a big achievement.

Appreciate the honest feedback! Do you mind saying why you havent enjoyed the course? Is this because of the uni? That's fab that you have had a supportive placement - I'm sure that makes all the difference. How are you feeling about going into the role once the training has finished? Is it a job people seem to enjoy/stay in? Does it seem like a good work/life balance once the training is over? My plan would ideally be to work PT once trained (even if 4 days a week); as I'm in London would hope there would be a few options. I haven't managed to find very much online really so really grateful for your reply!
