Sickness

I have poor sickness rating due to having 6 weeks off after a family tragedy. Now if I take 1 day it automatically triggers a meeting. I am recovering from a cold, still headaches, weakness, tired but on the mend. Im due in work tomorrow (I works weds and Fridays) I was asked a few weeks ago to cover this Thursday. Meaning this week I should work weds, thurs, Friday. I really don't want to work Thursday as I think it will be too much. But I don't want to phone in sick for my normal days. Is it unreasonable to say I will come in my normal days but cancel Thursday?

Not if you were asked to do it a few weeks ago and agreed to do it. Sorry, but if you agreed, whilst I am sympathetic to the fact that you don't feel well, you have committed to working those hours and can't unilaterally change them. So you either have to work them or admit that you aren't well and take time off sick.

Yes it is. Your working days this week are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday if that's what you agreed, so you would need to take sick leave really. Are you too sick to work?

Ok fair enough. If I don't work Thursday it wouldn't go down as sickness as it's relief cover so not my contracted hours.
I'm not 100% still feel dizzy/exhausted. I think I could manage tomorrow. Rest Thursday and manage Friday but not sure I can work three days straight.

I think you are confused about "contracted hours". Your employer is obliged to provide work on the days / times that you have mutually agreed. Either in your "contract" or otherwise. You mutually agreed to work Thursday, so this week your contracted hours include Thursday. "Relief" is just a random term to describe some variation in hours.

Neriah · 05/12/2023 12:38

That said they might agree if you ask. Depends on whether they can get cover again at such late notice. If you genuinely can't manage it, best to tell them and ask.

No it relief cover, at a different site . It's a rota we sign up for it has nothing to do with my actual job ( other than same over all employer) if I don't work I will be replaced by another relief. It won't be recorded as sickness. I could work tomorrow and see how I feel for Thursday it's just letting them down at even shorter notice

If it isn't an issue then what was the point of the question?

autienotnaughty · 06/12/2023 10:58

@Neriah well it's short notice to cancel the cover so I feel I'd need a good reason. But if I say illness it asks the question why are you on work if you are ill.

I did text and ask them to cover the shift , I said I was rundown and would prefer not to work. They have covered it so it's fine.
