Is it the done thing in your organisation to use your work calendar for non work things ?
Life Amin like school inset days, gas service, mot, partner’s pay day - that sort of thing.

Marked as private and at the top (not blocked out time IYSWM).

Done thing ? Or not the done thing ?

Most people where I work do exactly that. So long as it’s marked private.

LolaSmiles · 02/12/2023 15:48

I wouldn't know what's the norm at my work but I run my work diary and my home calendar separately unless there's something specific that I need.

I like keeping the two separate so wouldn't want to be reminded of work mental load when checking when the boiler service is booked for.

N4ish · 02/12/2023 15:50

Yes, totally normal! Why would anyone object?

Watto1 · 02/12/2023 15:51

Dh puts personal/family stuff on his calendar so he doesn’t forget things like inset days. Although there was one memorable occasion when he put one of my appointments on (he needed to collect the dc while I was there) and forgot to put it on private. “Mrs Watto smear test” was there for his entire company to read.

DelurkingAJ · 02/12/2023 15:52

Yep. We’re trusted (within reason) to manage our own diaries and therefore if I’ve got a dentist appointment/need to take the cat to the vet etc I put it in and then nobody tries to get me to a meeting at that time.

StoorieHoose · 02/12/2023 15:53

My personal calendar is Google based but I have it showing on my Outlook so I can see what I've got on but no one else can. I do also use Private events to book out time if my personal stuff is around lunchtime

mynameiscalypso · 02/12/2023 15:59

I use mine like that. They're often not private either but then again I don't really care who sees if it's my son's nativity play! I don't put life admin type stuff (eg 'pay electricity bill') but mainly events or when I need DH to be aware of something. My DH and I manage our calendars through invites so I'll often send an invite to him saying 'DH home early to look after DS' or something.

I do the same and send DH calendar invitations for personal events - parents' evenings, sports fixtures, need to collect DC etc.

I don't always mark as private but my work aren't particularly bothered as long as it's not taking the proverbial. I just have to remember to mark things as 'free' if they are there as a reminder for me rather than something I need to be at.

UsingChangeofName · 02/12/2023 16:19

No.
If there is something happening in working hours that I need to be at, I'd put 'Private Appt' or 'Medical Appt' or 'Lunch Break' .
a) It's none of anyone else's business what appointment I have
b) I wouldn't be having appts in work time, other than a medical appt that couldn't be moved.
c) whereas I can let someone in say to fit a carpet or service the boiler when I am working at home, I couldn't not attend a meeting to do with work, to do so, so I don't think it makes sense to put those things on a work calendar.

Ponderingwindow · 02/12/2023 16:21

I have to mark my personal appointments in my work calendar, otherwise people will
schedule meetings when I am not available. We have flexible work days and don’t need approval to go to the dentist or anything else, we just put it on our calendar marked private

QueSyrahSyrah · 02/12/2023 16:23

If I have something personal to do in work time (antenatal appointments at the moment) I block my calendar as 'busy' so nobody books anything else for me. I don't use it for anything outside of work though.

dudsville · 02/12/2023 16:27

Yes where there's an overlap i need to remember, but i don't put a lot of detail, for instance I'll say "gp appt" instead of cardiology, smear, etc.

TheBeef · 02/12/2023 16:52

You can set an appt as busy and private. You and anyone you invite (like your line manager) can see the reason, nobody else can.

In my team people mark school holidays as free time as reminders for themselves. Leave is an all day appt as our off office plus a 30 min appt to line manager and team calendar at 7am. We can better track busy leave times that way.

hopeishere · 02/12/2023 17:23

I have loads in mind! Like when the kids are off school to stuff I need to remember. It's all set to private though.

ANightingale · 02/12/2023 17:27

Yes - otherwise people might try to put meetings in those slots.
