Feeling deceitful and guilty

Probably seems a bit dramatic but this is the second night I've been unable to sleep because I feel guilty about asking to start late next week for a doctors appointment but infact I've got a Job interview. As it's the end of the year I've ran out of annual leave so didn't see another way round it. But I'm now feeling guilty about lieing and also worried if I hand my notice in a few days later it's going to be obvious

You won’t be able to hand in your notice til you have a start date. You might not get the job. Are you making up the hours? If so don’t feel guilty. Good luck with the interview.

@Eatbetterthisweek Thank you! No your right I might not get the job however I've had a telephone interview already with the director who has chased me all week asking to meet me and it seems very likely I could get it. Which is positive but I just feel so guilty. I wouldn't be able to make up the hours as I already work full time. I guess I could work through my lunches for a few days

If they do put 2 and 2 together and work out you had an interview and not a doctors appointment, it won't matter because you will have handed your notice in, they can hardly sack you.

Eatbetterthisweek · 02/12/2023 02:59

They won’t work it out just chill.

Good Lord! Rest assured no leader in your company would lose sleep about your personal circumstances if they had to make you redundant.
You are the CEO of your life and career, prioritise and make decisions accordingly.

CrazyTimes123 · 02/12/2023 15:35

@7Worfs I’m going to print this off and stick it to my fridge!

Ollifer · 02/12/2023 15:36

You could easily make up an hour after work if you feel that guilty op. But honestly I wouldn't give it a second thought. Lots of us will have done the same at some point.

youveturnedupwelldone · 02/12/2023 18:34

I think this is fairly common, some employers simply won't allow you to take time off for an interview, which means lots of people are making up excuses!

FUPAgirl · 03/12/2023 09:28

It's done now, just do your best and get the job! Good luck!

Sconehenge · 04/12/2023 13:28

Every job interview I’ve ever had has been a “personal appointment” - I really wouldn’t sweat it or feel guilty at all.

You mean, when they get the reference request they won't know the OP lied about being at the doctors? Maybe the OP will get away with it. Maybe the employer will work it out, in which case I hope they don't need a reference.

It's surprising how people who have absolutely no knowledge of the employer or the risk can give blasé advice saying it's absolutely fine to lie about stuff to your employer. I hope the OP doesn't suffer the consequences of lying, I genuinely do. But to be clear, if my actually rather flexible and mostly decent employer was lied to like this, you'd get no reference other than "dismissed for gross misconduct".

Gross misconduct?

pumpkinfarm · 04/12/2023 20:34

We've all done it. Chances are your manager has done it at some point, and his/her manager too. I imagine they'll be more concerned with having to recruit/replace you than the fact you told a small white lie. No decent manager/person is going to take it up with HR and try to get you fired for gross misconduct! Honestly, I know it's not ideal, but it's really not a huge deal I promise :) Good luck with the interview.

CapitanSandy · 04/12/2023 21:07

I’m doing it tomorrow and not given it a second thought
