Building a database with images

Sort of work related but this seemed to be the best place to ask.

I have a collection of items, a number of which are in storage.
I'd like to create a database to allow me to save all the details (e.g. material, size, colour) along with an image of the item.
At present I have an excel spreadsheet with various descriptors, but as some things are similar, it can take time to work out what they are from the description.
My initial thought was to try to convert the spreadsheet I to a database, but wondering if I have missed something simpler.
Last time I attempted something like this was 20+ years ago and that was to collate forms, with no images involved.

Any advice or suggestions extremely welcome.

It depends what you need to do with it and what tools you have available. How often do you have to update it? How many other people need to use it?

I assume it's an excel spreadsheet?

The simplest option might be to add images into the spreadsheet (i.e have a column for images).

@Franklet me using it 95% of the time. Probably needing to update it quarterly or thereabouts.
Just used for tracking what there is, where it is (and how many of things).
If I could embed a photo link that might work.
I was thinking a database would be a neat solution but anything that works easily is fine.

Tropy is great for organising and tagging images https://tropy.org/ It was made for researchers who take photos of documents in lots of different archives but could be useful for your collection as well, especially if you are the main user of the collection information and images.

Explore your research photos

Tropy is free open-source software that allows you to organize and describe photographs of research material.
