@woodkitchen the college should have a careers adviser or a way to refer students.

Is there something specific you’d like to know?

Thanks just looking for help in choosing what type of jobs/apprenticeships to apply for or what career to aim for when unsure. Already left college and didnt access any help whilst there!

He can still access help at the college from careers.

Otherwise the national careers link pp posted has a careers quiz. It’s a lot of questions but will give some suggestions based on skills and interests.

Can also just look at apprenticeships.gov.uk and see what is available within 20miles or at relevant level.

There should also be a careers service offer for 16-18s that serves your area.

What quals did he gain at college? Does he have any ideas in mind?

Browse apprenticeships before you apply

We have tried the 16-18 yr careers service. It didnt offer any guidance at all and seemed to me to exist to get 16 to 18 year olds who had dropped out to do something. Got As/B at maths/science/computing type A levels so obvious choice would be computing, engineering or finance I guess. Not looking at uni.

With those subjects a degree apprenticeship in areas such as finance, banking, business or engineering are possible.
Ucas.com lists some degree apprenticeships but also worth looking at big employers like Nestle, HSBC for their offers. There’s also a few airline pilot apprenticeships
that would be accessible.

The college would want a positive progression for their students so it is still possible to see them.

We do even a year after students have left.

Try the quiz though see if that helps narrow his focus.

Hi there, my son is in year 10 and looking for work experience mainly to do with sport science, just wondering if any of you have any suggestions of where to go? We are based around Guildford, Surrey.
Thanks

Woodbog · 03/01/2024 18:26

Preferably designing and sport science?

Apprenticeships - Look at the companies that work in the sectors you are interested in for apprenticeship and the entry criteria to their schemes, if they offer them. The following websites will help.
https://www.ucas.com/apprenticeships
https://www.prospects.ac.uk/
https://apprenticeshipguide.co.uk/apprenticeship-category/work-types/computing-and-it/
Sports Science - work experience - look for gyms, sports centres, local colleges that offer sports courses as they sometimes take work experience, some hospitals have schemes for KS4 programmes, football or rugby clubs - just a few ideas. Part of the process is for him to approach the companies and he will do better than if Mum does it for him. I used to manage a programme of work experience and employers like to see a student make the effort to ask for a placement.

Thank you

OP
Did he get actual A levels?

Agree with all the links above.
Also look at Rate my Apprenticeship, The Apprenticeship Guide, and also look at LinkedIn.

No one site has all the vacancies. He should also look at different levels.

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 04/01/2024 20:11

Also look at the not going to Uni website as well.

as an early years recruiter please please please get him to write a cover letter when he’s applying for jobs to say why he’s interested in the role… could be he likes playing with Lego, enjoyed helping grandad retire … this will be the edge on whether he gets an interview or not

(sorry reviewed 40 CVS today for 4 jobs and 30 of them were absolutely shockingly bad and I couldnt decide whether to interview or not …. In the end I rejected them and went with the ones who wrote a comprehensive CV & said why they wanted the job!)
