I am going back to work part-time i need part-time work with flexible hours, have been accepted for a job doing home care which i am happy about but am also keeping my options open, have also applied to be a courier for Next!

What part-time job do you do & what hours? does it work around your children?

I work for a small ish bank (Bradford & Bingley) in my nranch tehre are 3 full timers, 3 part times (me, one lady who does 9.15-1.15 monday to thursday, another lady who does one day in week and every saturday but she is 'mature' lady (ie no kids) so her day in week is flexible)

I started as cashier (well customer services adviser), worked up to deputy manager then had dd1 and rest is in last post.

I love working in the bank but it is very very sales driven (they all are) thats why I love my admin job now. Most banks actually prefer part time staff ie mornings (9-1ish or 1-5ish) or afternoons or lunch time (10.30-2.30 hours) as more part time people means more flexibility within the team and obviously they like to have more people in at busy times (in fact my hours are probably the most inflexible when I wwas working on counter as I couldnever cover tues/weds/thurs because no childcare) I am not sure I'd chose to go back to counter because of the sales side, when I was full time(And childless) I love the sales pressure and bonuses that were to be earnt but now I want to do my h=job and go home.

Although another advantage is that when you have long service you get rewarded, I have worked at my branch over 10 years fab pay,6 weeks holiday plus all bank hols and private medical care for me,dh,both dd's and they pay all my pension for me. Also as i knew so many of my customers a few came to the church when I got married and I had some wonderful gifts when the dd's were born

and obviously from my last post - typing skills not required!!

ScoobyDoo · 12/03/2008 20:03

I work 14 hours per week as a playworker at an After School Club. My dh is a Golf Course Manager and he starts early and finishes at 3pm so he comes home and collects DS2 from me and goes to get DS1 from school and I leave for work at the same time. DH gives the kids their dinner and I get home at about 6.20pm so have an hour and a half before they go to bed. It is also term time only and because of DH's hours I need no childcare. Doesn't pay great but I love it.

Customer service/sales are the 2 things we look for when looking at CV's, try writing to all your local banks and building societies, I know filter all CV's and keep then in my area dsignated file (I help recruit for Kent and Sussex so put CV's into relaistic travelling times sections) what I have found really helpful is if people put the hours they are available in a covering letter as it saves me ringing 10 applicants who are looing for 'part time vacancy' to find 8 of tghen cant do the hours we are advertising.

We keep all Cv's for 12months and in fact that is how I got my job, I wrote to all local places in September (did ALevels that summer and then temping work) and had phone call at end of october asking if I was still looking for work ,1st interview in November, 2nd interview in December , offered job week before christmas and started 12th January 1998! The other good thing with banks is no sundays and guaranteed all bank holidays off!!

eandh · 12/03/2008 20:11

I now filter Cv's

eandh · 12/03/2008 20:12

If you live in Kent or Sussex let me know and I'll send you my work email address!!

Scooby - will watch with interest re cv.

I would love to go back to an office environment (DS's now 11 and 8). I have done part time evening work since DS2 turned 3.

In the last 2 years, I have progressed to working during the day within school hours two days and only two evenings. I don't work the days in school hols but obviously I don't get paid.

I would now like to move on to working no evenings.

My last "proper" role was PA to a senior member of management in a Life Assurance Company and I worked for this company for 12 years.

I would be really happy being a receptionist or doing something in an admin role but to be honest I don't know where to start with a cv.

OP posts:
eandh · 12/03/2008 20:35

or this

worley · 12/03/2008 20:36

im a radiographer and now do 5 mornings a week 8.30 till 1. plus i have to be on the ocall rota so do weekend shifts and night shifts which bump my wages up so i can afford childcare. i drop ds1 off at 7.50 for school breakfast club and there is a busybees nursery on the hospital grounds so ideal.

a decent boss as mentioned earlier is a bonus. my boss (who is also female) "suggested" i should have nanny and carry on working full time after i had ds2 as she had always managed to work full time after her 2 dc. never mind her dh was his own boss and earnt more than my dp could ever dream of earning. some bosses are on a different planet..

ScoobyDoo · 12/03/2008 20:37
