How to pass a probation period at new job?

Starting a software engineer role with my local police force in January after vetting is completed. There will be a 6 month probation period, I am planning to do some upskilling before hand. What else can I do to ensure I pass the probation period?

Behave.

Turn up on time and don't be shit at the job, it's really not worth thinking about it more than that!

Basically, don’t fuck up. The default is to pass a probation period. You only fail it if you massively screw up: are completely incompetent, repeatedly absent etc.

No-one wants to have the expense and hassle of restarting the recruitment process so you’ll be fine as long as you are basically competent at your job. It’s not an extended interview, you’re not in competition with anyone.

Turn up every day, work hard, don’t go off sick, have a good attitude.

And if its a position that required and SC or DV check you are even less likely to fail probation as it’s a major expense to the sponsoring organisation.

As a line manager for many years I can tell you that not passing probation (at least in the industry I work in) is really quite rare.
Be on time, watch your attendance (sickness happens, you're human, try to limit i if possible and follow their sickness policy to the t if you are off)
That's it really - if you're worried about not knowing how to do the job specifically, ask plenty of questions during your onboarding and training and have someone to go to in the event you need guidance.
You'll be fine.

Turn up on time. Don't muck around. Listen. Do the job asked of you. Don't go all out to try and change things unless that is what is asked of you. Ask for feedback on a monthly basis and listen to it.

Managers really want you to pass the probation - the thought of starting all over again with recruitment and then onboarding makes us weep. As long as you are halfway competant, turn up on time, don't take excessive sick and seem amiable enough - you'll pass.

Ha! Hollow laughter...my manager didn't want me to pass. I did eventually pass but I had to be moved manager to his boss!
If you don't fit you don't fit, I moved somewhere where I fit much better.
