Had an interview today - think I blew it - just 'pat my arm' for me and say there there . . .

Was for a management position at the place I work.
2 part interview.
Role Play/presentation
Formal interview.
With my current boss and a.n. other.
Now they played the roles of staff members and me manager (obviously). Other people who've done it warned me that my boss can and often does, play the part of a very difficult mouthy staff member . . . Nope they were both lovely helpful staff members full of ideas so now I think they felt sorry for me or didn't think I was worth challenging.
In the interview I didn't get any particularly difficult questions again didn't feel I was being tested or questioned much at all.
AND In my invitation to interview it estimated a 2hr 10 minute interview. I was out 35 minutes earlier than that!!!
So do you think my boss was just paying me lip service even giving me an interview?
Oh bugger.

I'm sure it went well Fingers crossed

That could go one of two ways -

It could be that it was a token interview and they never intended on giving you the job

OR

It could be that they really want you to get it so gave you an easy interview so that they can demonstrate that you aced it IYSWIM (i.e. that they can tick all the boxes on the interview form)

Hope it's option number two!

Good luck

there there

chrissnow · 12/03/2008 16:43

Thanks. It's so annoying as well when you think of things that you could have said.
I asked to be given feedback at a later date and they said yes, so at least I'll know exactly what the problems were.

I'm at work tonight. Do you think it's worth asking my boss if I made a total fool of myself? Or will that just make him think less of me? Interviews are now over. I was the last but one!!!

How are you Chrissnow?

chrissnow · 14/03/2008 12:11

Feeling much better thanks for asking.
One of the managers at work had a chat with me last night as she was 'dying to know' how i'd got on. (I think she wants another female manager so she's not alone!!) She was fab and gave me a lot of perspective.
a) Boss (who was one of interviewers) is a very closed book when it comes to these things and will not give anything away to anyone.
b) Having given my 'role play' scanario to her. She said it sounds like you pre-empted any bolshy behaviour before it happened so he wouldn't have played you up.
c) The shortness and 'ease' of interview (in comaprison to others (did i mention it was short?) could be a good thing. She said she has interviewed people and got nothing out of them in 40 minutes and got everything she wanted to hear from others in 10. She said they were unlikely to harp on at me if I gave them the information they wanted quickly.
The boss did speak to me briefly last night. He will not say anything before the decision is made (2-4 weeks) and I didn't ask him to. He said what I can say was you looked really nice!!! (He is a nice guy).
I'm far less paranoid and negative now. had good advice from you guys too which was appreciated.

You must tell us when you know!

chrissnow · 18/03/2008 16:31

I will do. They said 2-4 weeks . so it will have dropped off active convos/threads I'm on. Will start shiny new thread titled . . . . Chrissnow (s)knows you (s)know or something better!!

That's ages how will you survive!

I will keep my eyes peeled for the good news (see I'm assuming the best here!)

chrissnow · 18/03/2008 17:00

I know!! Made worse by the fact I have to go to work and see him and get grinned and chatted to like nothing in the world has happened (he is so good at poker face!)
It's killing me!
Thanks for the supportive assumption.

YouKnowNothingOfTheCrunch - Well I didn't get it!!
I did get to the final 3 and passed the assesment (the role play bit) so if I ever apply for similar position I only have to interview. He said he hasn't been surprised by anyone for a long time, but I surprised him. He now wants to talk to me about what else he can do for me/offer me. Where to go from here and asked if I'd be interested in being an 'acting' manager i.e. to cover sick/holiday leave.
He's just waiting for the other interviewer to send her report then he's going to sit down and have an in depth talk. That will happen tonight apparently!!

Well done on getting to the final 3.
How would you feel about being 'Acting Manage'

chrissnow · 02/04/2008 08:00

Thank you. Didn't get the in-depth chat.
It sounds good to me doing the 'acting manager' It will be a change, little bit of extra cash (not a huge amount, but tbh that's not really what this is about), None of the real manager stress, and a chance to prove myself. Should another position become available it will then stand me in better stead (and there is a v strong likelyhood of another position becoming available very soon).
I need to talk it through with the boss and see what it entails and what the other things he was wanting to talk to me about. I then need to sit down with DH and see how everything would fit in with our lives.

Only just seen this! I'm sorry you didn't get the job but it sounds like the only thing you were lacking is actual managerial experience; which they're offering you!

So I'm going ahead and congratualting you anyway That all sounds really positive. It sounds like your boss was thoroughly pleased with your interview and is lining you up for the next open job.

So, even though you didn't get it... well done and good luck with it all
