Self employed - how much bereavement leave?

If you're self employed / freelance, how much bereavement leave is appropriate? My partner's father sadly passed away today, and oh has work contracted for a client at the moment, until the end of December. He works remotely from home.

He's asked to take tomorrow unpaid as bereavement leave, but isn't sure if he should take any more time off? Obviously it would be unpaid leave as he's self employed not an employee at the company. He feels he needs a few days at home and helping / being with his Mum but is worried the client won't agree to it?

I would think if his Mum needs support to organise a funeral up to a week is not uncommon plus the funeral day itself.

He needs to just tell the client he won't be available for (however long) as his Dad has died. Under the circumstances its not up to them to 'agree to it'

It's a very difficult time & he needs to grieve & support his mum. His head won't be in the right place to work at the moment

He tells he doesn't ask. My father has passed away, I need to be with my family for the time being. I will be in touch when I am able.

It is a very personal thing and it depends on how they are feeling, what needs to be done etc.

When my M&D died I could of had as much time off as I wanted (within reason obviously) as my company were very understanding.
Both times I took 4-days (Inc funerals) and had colleagues asking why I had come in as they would of had a fortnight.
On the other hand, a colleague came in the day his mum died as he said he didn't want to be at home. He took a day for the funeral only.

A very personal thing.

It's totally up to him as a business owner - it's not something his clients get to agree with. I say that as a self-employed business owner who has taken last minute days off for personal emergencies.

My family comes first and any decent client will respect that. In the last year I've rescheduled jobs due to a funeral and emergency medical appointments for elderly relatives - any client who wasn't understanding about it was welcome to go elsewhere, frankly.
