Recruiter said they'd get back to me yesterday but they didn't, is that a bad sign?

I was made redundant in June from a business analyst role in which I worked in for 5 years.

I took a short holiday after that, I have been applying to some jobs after that and have had a few interviews but with no luck.

Last month I had an interview for software engineer role on a 18 month contract at my local police station. The manager for the role got back in touch with me a few days after and said that i don't have the exact skills to get started straightaway as it's only for 18 months the role doesn't have much time to be trained up in as it covers a wide range of services, however she told me about an upcoming role in the same team which she feels my skills are more aligned with.

Its a similar role and is a 2 year contract so there is more time to learn on the job and it covers less wide projects.

She told me that I will need to go through the application and interview process again, but she has asked me to get in touch if I have any questions.

The talent acquisition lead/internal recruiter emailed me the link to the role 2 weeks ago and he said 'we have to be fair and advertise this to everyone, but we would really like you to apply for this role' so I applied for it.

The job post closed last week, and the interview was 2 days ago.

I thought it went well, it was with the same people as last time. Towards the end they talked a lot about the onboarding process e.g vetting, training and working arrangements. They said they would get in touch with me the next day but I haven't heard anything, is that a bad sign?

Well I doubt you will get any different responses to all your other posts on this. As others have already told you, it can take a few days sometimes to hear back, especially if one or more panel members are not available, this is even more likely in public sector, as they have to follow strict procedure in recruitment processes.

The recruitment process is super frustrating. There could be lots of reasons for the delay. It could be anything. It aint over till its over so hang in there. Start looking at other jobs to distract yourself.

Wishing you lucky vibes and hope you get it Flowers

No. I think every job I have been hired at they were later getting in touch than they expected.

Sometimes its actually a great sign, they need to get everyone to agree what they are offering before they offer and someone vital is sick/ on annual leave/ in back to back meetings.

If you are an easy definite No they'd be more likely to be able to let you know that within the timeline.

I wouldn't worry after a day or so to get in touch and ask if you are still under consideration. It may be a yes or a no but at least you will know. If you do it politely and kindly why would they mind ?

I'm am a recruiter happy to help where I can ;

  • no update
  • hiring manager hasn't responded back
  • forgot
  • overwhelmed as it's very likely half their team and resources have been cut in the last 6 months as our industry has been decimated by cuts

Also it depends how they operate

Public sector usually take all applicants through the funnel , review everyone who has passed final stage and pick the strongest applicant

Private sector it's first to the finish line who meets the criteria in many environments due to lots of pressures
