Let go from role but work won't reimburse expenses

I've just been let go from my role just before end of probation period. As if I'm not already raging that I was let go 2 weeks before being made permanent, I was invited to the work Christmas do in another city. Company gets employees to pay for transport and company reimburses later.

Asking for reimbursement for train tickets I've already purchased (£100) as I won't be attending - manager says I am still welcome to attend but they can only cover costs of employees. I won't be working for the company at the time of the party.

This sounds completely outrageous to me. Can they do this or was I foolish to pay for the tickets? I've had to get reimbursed for other travel expenses months before end of probation. One friend has said I should have waited until 2 weeks before the event before buying travel tickets so I am doubting myself.

Christ thats awful - I dont know the legality of it, as technically a social event, but then if they are reimbursing other peoples travel, its massively unfair not to reimburse yours.

Are they a big company?

Changed18 · 17/11/2023 16:03

I think you can get train tickets refunded if you buy them but then don’t use.

seaweedhead · 17/11/2023 16:04

Yes you should be able to get the tickets refunded, I've done this before.

Afteropening · 17/11/2023 16:07

op you have no rights at all

you took a risk

it hasn’t paid off

they are reimbursing employees

not ex employees

Afteropening · 17/11/2023 16:08

how long was probation? did they indicate why failed?

Agree: this is so rude it’s a drop in the ocean to them/they have a budget for it and you were expecting it to be reimbursed

OP - do as others have said and refund tickets from train company BUT know that no decent company would behave like this, I hope you will look back and see this as a bullet dodged

Good luck finding another job!

Afteropening · 17/11/2023 16:12

but if the train company will refund

i don’t see the problem as no other expenses incurred

Incey · 17/11/2023 16:14

Christ that’s shitty of them. Sorry op.

Afteropening · 17/11/2023 16:14

BUT know that no decent company would behave like this,

we don’t know the reasons for the OP not passing her probation. Perhaps she didn’t behave “decently”

Whataretheodds · 17/11/2023 16:14

Do you still plan to go?

If not, apply for a refund on the tickets and ask them again to expense any residual costs.

waitholdup · 17/11/2023 16:17

Afteropening · 17/11/2023 16:07

Well obviously, but OP would not have bought the train tickets unless she was planning to go to the event as an employee

Hopefully she will be able to refund her tickets with a minimal fee

she took a risk

she could have waited until she knew

no one forced her to buy them before she knew about probation

Are you a rather vulnerable and prone to anxiety poster who thinks anyone who has a different perspective on something must have a self interest motivation? 😂

Afteropening · 17/11/2023 16:26

pointing out she could have waited to find out if she passed her probation before booking train travel for a christmas event…. doesn’t mean i am the boss!

Janeandme · 17/11/2023 16:29

To be fair, I would assume these tickets are refundable too, so I’d have this as my first go to. The op does seem to have bought the tickets very early and seldom does failing probation come as a huge shock.

Well as OP says she is raging, it doesn’t sound like she had her hands in the til

If gross misconduct companies can and should just fire employees, otherwise it’s difficult and I would assume that OP has behaved decently

@Afteropening : do you enjoy kicking people when they are down?

Afteropening · 17/11/2023 16:46

All i am saying is that the OP took a risk and it didn’t pay off and the employer isn’t going to cover her for the risk she took by booking before probation news!

TerfTalking · 17/11/2023 17:26

If they’re Advance tickets you can’t get a refund, they are cheaper as you book them in advance and are non refundable. Had she still been employed I expect the employer would have been happy with her foresight.

either way, that’s one shitty company, if you had put your claim for in right away, you could have already been reimbursed. I would write one of my strongly worded letters informing them that you were advised to purchase the ticket and would be reimbursed before they let you go therefore they should honour that. if you were advised to do that BTW? If you weren’t I wouldn’t have bought so far in advance as I wasn’t paying so couldn’t care less.

if the push comes to the shove, I think you might be able to change the date in advance for a £10 admin fee, but not 💯 maybe book somewhere in the city with friends.
