What would be your take on this? Being tipped off about a job.

5 years ago I started working for an organisation. Moved up quickly. After 2.5 years I moved to work for another organisation that comprised my original workplace and a few other workplaces of same type. I have been a continuous presence in my original workplace whilst not technically being employed by them.

Without sounding braggy I know I am held in high regard at my original workplace.

On Feb this year I approached my former boss to let her know that I would like to move back to her organisation and asked her to keep me in mind for any roles that might arise. I knew that she and her colleague (manager and assistant manager) are due to retire within the next few years and the company are planning for the future. I figured I should throw my hat in the ring so to speak.

A month ago I got a call from my former boss to let me know on the quiet that one of the jobs would be advertised soon. In this call she spoke about the opportunities for growth that this job would offer and spoke about how the company was succession planning.

Earlier this week she came to see me to let me know job had gone live. I've since applied.

Obviously I know that the best candidate will ultimately get the job but am I being completely off to think that her approaching me hasn't been done completely without thought and a degree of intent? Boss is super professional, would never act outside of the wants of the partners.

It will be her and the partners who do the interview and make the decision (I will of course prepare thoroughly and do the strongest interview I can).

This would be a dream job for me hence my overthinking.

Any thoughts?

Thank you if you've made it this far 🍰

If this was my organisation, we'd want a strong field for the post, so we'd get in touch with all candidates we thought would be good and invite them to apply. So it's a good sign in that she wouldn't have invited you to apply, or made the effort to come and see you, if she didn't think you'd be a strong candidate for the post, but it's also likely that she (or other members of the panel) will have done similar for other good candidates.

Agree with PP. There’s no way that just one person would be able to make the call, and also no way that a decent org would be able to appoint ahead of interview. I’ve also gone into interviews with a clear idea of who I would appoint - and come out having appointed someone completely different. It shows you’re well regarded, but it doesn’t show much more beyond that.

Cake was good thanks x

i would assume they are interested in seeing what I've been
up to since leaving & if I'd be good for the job.

hoeever, I'd assume they may have done the same to others & will advertise to get the strongest candidates.

id be hopeful, but not put too much weight in it.

best of luck!!
