Tips for Job Hunting

Underparmummy · 11/11/2023 19:06

Looking to move on, I really need to. I haven't done job hunting at my current level before though (top management). I need to keep salary at least the same as dh has just left his role and started his own company. Looking good so far but obviously not stable (for full disclosure good sized mortgages and dc at private schools).
Does anyone have any tips? Suffering some confidence issues. Also I think feeling stuck as now my family would be better if I stuck it out but it is pretty toxic and I have always been career focused...

I was in a similar-ish position recently. I think you just need to jump in and give it a go.

I felt so much more confident once I completed my first application - I think I was just ground down by my previous workplace.

Good luck 🙂.

Thank you! Have submitted a few but really outside chance ones via easy apply on LinkedIn so not 'proper' in a way.

Have you managed to move?

(also, typo, only the one bloody mortgage!)

Yes, I've moved, and it was definitely a positive move for me. My new role is similar to my old one, but the everyday reality is very different. I wonder why I stayed for so long in my old role now!

No more easy apply, monumental waste of time. Find 1 or 2 jobs a week you really really like the look of and spend hours tailoring your CV and especially covering letter for. Get really good at promoting your USP. And call in favours from your network, ask them if there's any roles going where they are.

Ok, thanks, taking notes and inspired that you did move @GeneCity ! Easy apply does seem too easy to be real! Thanks.

I agree with @MovingAround90, mention to people you know that you're thinking of moving, and to let you know if they're aware of anything suitable.

I was given some great advice.

Lots of recruiters look on Reed for candidates and she also let me know you can put a setting on LinkedIn that's kept private but shows recruiters you are looking for work.

Thank you @thebraispink! Off to put myself on Reed asap...

For me recently it’s been updating linked in but also posting my CV on job sites and then applying for jobs.

I actually got an interview for a job next week, the recruiter (in house in company) found my CV on one and rang me.

Also, look for jobs which are tailored to what you’d like to do, eg I wanted to work in house as legal PA/Sec not for a law firm so have looked specifically for those jobs in past and applied. Yes, they may not all be suitable or you may not get called for interview but at least you’re being proactive and looking.

Agreed with asking in your network too. You never know what might turn up,
