I currently work in health and social care as a trainer. Have done for over 20 years so have a lot of experience. Have a wealth of experience in Train the trainers, Mentsl helath, learning disability, dementia, older people services.

I am considering working shifts on the weekend for a care company along side my FT role, as a support worker/carer so that I can complete my level 2,3, 4 and eventually level 5 in leadership. I appreciate i would have to up my hours to complete these.

My long term goal is to open a service for reablement/dom care.

Do you think this is realistic?

How old are you? Do you have the time? How long until qualified?

I’m 43. So it will be a few years until I get my level 5….

What's the market like for that? As in, would you actually be able to break even or turn a profit?

I work in tendering in social care. Dom care is the most unpredictable (compared to supported living etc.) your leadership courses probably won’t give you a good enough grasp of the finances/ hr /people management /employment/commissioning etc. why do you want to run your own org? Could you find a provider you are passionate about and work your way up there? Maybe somewhere which offers franchises so you could do that down the line. Senior management is incredibly stressful: many senior managers (in many organisations I’ve seen) work insane hours, are avaliable for emergencies almost all the time. Personally it’s not something I’d want to be starting in my fifties (assuming it would take a chunk of time to get to your ultimate goal).

good luck whatever you decide. Social care is a tough sector
