Term-time work - help!

I've been looking for over a year to get term time work but so far haven't had any luck.

I'm a single parent and in desperate need of a job and some money. I can only work term time because 2 of my children are in high school and are too old for childminders. I've been a SAHM for the last 12 years.

I haven't really got the time or energy to retrain, I wanted to a classroom assistant for a while, I need something I can just slot straight into. I was a secretary before I had my children, I'm a volunteer in my local primary school and a support group administrator too.

All the school admin jobs require some sort of maths/book-keeping skills, I'm hopeless at maths.

Really struggling with this!! My self esteem is taking a battering. Anyone got any ideas? Help!!

Thanks!

Keep an eye out in your local paper for school receptionist jobs. At our school, one of the receptionists works 8am til 1 pm, term time only - fantastic hours! As long as you have decent computer skills, you'd be fine - doesn't require maths/book-keeping. Also, I've seen ads for invigilators at the local tech but that's only a short term solution since only required in exam season.

You say you don't want to retrain but looking at getting some training as a TA, or going back to college to improve your maths skills would boost your marketability and your self-esteem. Tbh, I would say working towards becoming a TA is your best bet so it might be worth looking into what that would require.

do you like small children? how about working at a pre-school?

titchy · 10/03/2008 14:47

Second being a TA, or lunchtime assistant in school. Also try local colleges for term time only. Or your local council, or even hospital. Lots of public sector jobs now are on annual hours contracts, so to an extent as long as you work all the hours in your contract in a year you can take time off in school holidays.

Aren't there holiday clubs for teenagers though? Are they old enough to leave at home for a few horus?

Thanks for all your suggestions!

Slayerette: I haven't seen any school receptionist jobs, I'll keep my eyes peeled for those, that would really suit me.

Iota: I love being around small children and currently work an hour a week in a creche but I've got a back problem so it's a painful hour and I'm having to give it up

Titchy: I've tried the hospital and had an interviews there but they have said to me that they 'don't do term time'.

SBF: Lollypop lady is the wrong hours for me cos I'm taking my own children to school at those times! I've been offered a job but it wasn't term time and when I broached the subject I just got 'we don't do term time here'.

I'm thinking of volunteering in a school or a charity (something like Surestart) and hopefully they would eventually give me a job and fit it to the hours I need - or am I living in a dreamworld? Have to think up what to put in a letter "hello, I'd like to volunteer for you..." not sure that would do!

Try the ETeach website for school jobs - not just for teachers! Also local council website.

What about secretarial/admin temping work through a recruitment agency? You can take the holidays off if you want to.

anniebear · 11/03/2008 12:16

How about doing a working from home Job?

There is an usborne thread at the moment in this section ,

Catnkids · 11/03/2008 21:44

Thanks everyone for your advice, that's great.

Titchy: I'm more than an hour from Stockport so it's not do-able for me but I'll keep checking that website for other jobs.

Thanks ladies for your help!
