Today, I took a pack of information to my boss to ask for a pay rise.
It had my salary/role details (point 3 of Payband 5 level) plus:
- Details of a more junior level role recently advertised (on my pay band - PayBand 5 - though I am now on 3rd point which is £800 higher)
- Details of a nearly equivalent role recently advertised - but some key/high level responsibilities are not there. Salary advertised PayBand 6 - starting pay £1400 above mine
- Details of a spot on equivalent role very recently advertised (on PayBand 7 - starting pay £3800 above mine).
I put the neatly prepared pack on her desk and she immediately gave it back to me (not rudely) and explained that she had already raised the issue of a pay rise, it was currently being signed off so to hold fire, so as not to muddy the waters.
A couple of hours later she told me, yep, now on Payband6 as of today.
So I have just got a £1400 payrise - without asking. Obviously feeling valued and appreciated.
But actually, I was aiming for 2,500 - 3,500 payrise. The Payband7 role advertised is 100% a match for responsibility levels. How do I go about asking for this - as it seems really ungrateful to my boss - who went into bat for me. In education (no money).
Should i just wait til I get the paperwork through and then ask for more? Suck it up?
Arghhh. (I know, not a bad dilemma.) Help please.
(Oh and don't want to go for the Payband7 role as love current team/school/my kids are here/it is a breeze of a commute)
