Signed off & giving notice

I am currently signed off sick (full pay) with stress/anxiety for 1 month, I have had 3 weeks so 1 more to go then I will be back at work. Before I got signed off I applied for another job and I went for the interview this week and they have offered me the job. My notice period is 12 weeks.

Im looking for reassurance that if I hand my notice in during my last week being signed off, I can continue to work for the remaining 11 weeks and leave as I would if I hadn’t been signed off?
I don’t know much about employment law so I’m unsure what HR might say to me and if it will all just go as it normally should.

my stress/anxiety was 90% related to work so I feel a huge relief now I know I am getting out and going to a fresh new job. My new job will have more flexibility and more money. I am also worried they might query how I could go for an interview if I was so anxious! I know they can’t actually say that but I hugely worry about what people think. Also for context when I got signed off I was immensely down, non-stop crying (to my manager) and unable to leave the house.

I do feel I will be able to work my notice and don’t want to continue to be signed off as I have had this time off to rest and get my head together. I also would not receive full pay for another 12 weeks so I don’t want to be signed off for the whole time.

thank you for any help!

If you do manage this OP, I have to say… you’ve timed this all rather well!

Well I have been unhappy and stressed for months now and have spoken to my manager about this before. Work has been very stressful recently and I do have other anxieties outside of work. I applied for the job one week before I had basically a breakdown and got signed off. I didn’t hear from the job application for 2 weeks, I had forgotten about it as I thought I didn’t get shortlisted. I nearly didn’t go for the interview.

i didn’t plan it to happen like this

As for whether paid or not - yes you will be paid as per your contract.

even though you’re off sick - you are still employed by them

If you are working your notice absolutely no problem. What references did you give?

Good question!

Have you ever had medically diagnosed stress @Clearspring1 ? You're coming across as very unpleasantly judgmental. OP didn't post in AIBU.

I would hand in your notice on your first day back and try to negotiate a much lower notice period, you could use the fact that the reason you are leaving is the amount of stress that the job has put you under. Quoting that you have just had a month off because of it.

12 weeks when you have been struggling is going to be very difficult to do, and you will want to be stress free and refreshed for starting your new position.

Congrats on the new job 😀

Completely agree, MaggieFS.

Congratulations on the new post, OP. Well done!

References - I will give my line manager and another colleague I work alongside. I have worked here for 5+ years and have never been sick before, I have a good reputation otherwise (I believe). This last 6 months and last month especially have been awful unfortunately.
