First day at new job and I feel disappointed

I left a job that I enjoyed but was not enough hours available for me, I started a new job today with the perfect amount of hours but I've come away feeling really disappointed and flat.
I feel like they just had me do all of the 'rubbish' jobs like emptying the bins and it was not what I was expecting at all.
My husband says it's only the first day and see how I get on, do you think I need to give it more time?
😞

Definitely give it more time. The thing with a new starter is they need to be shown how to do anything, so its easiest to give the quick jobs that don't need much explaining to do to start- especially if they are busy.

I'm sure better and more complicated things will come your way in the the next few days/ week.

dewisant2020 · 30/10/2023 20:53

Sorry to hear your first day wasn't what you expected, it's definitely to soon to say you don't like it, give it a few weeks and you'll more than likely settle in.
I always found new jobs hard at first as you don't know anything and it's learning everything all over again

WrongSwanson · 30/10/2023 20:56

First day - it's hard if you are busy to train someone on anything straight away, so you often end up giving them really basic jobs. I'd give it time..

If the right hours come up at your old job you can always reapply

BlueBlueBerries · 30/10/2023 20:58

Why were you emptying bins, what was the role you started in today?

Doyouthinktheyknow · 30/10/2023 21:00

First days are horrible! I’d say you need to give it a couple of weeks at least!

In my current job, I wanted to leave at the end of my first day and I hated the job I left! I’ve been there more than 5 years now and it was without a doubt the best career decision I ever made!

I have no words of wisdom but wanted to give commiserations. It was my first day in a new job today as well and I also came home horribly disappointed 😪On the verge of asking for my old job back tbh

It's in hospitality, I thought I would be serving customers and taking orders etc but I was mainly washing up and emptying bins

First days are always a bit rubbish, I’d give it a bit longer before making any rash decisions

That what I did on my very first day in hospitality/f&b.
Now I'm supervisor/shift manager.

Thehonestybox · 30/10/2023 21:24

Tbh sometimes the existing staff aren't prepared with arranging a full role's worth of work for new starters so they get you doing random stuff. Give it a month and see if you're still in the same situation before forming any opinions

Guttedme · 30/10/2023 21:38

When you know, you know. Fully support here.

I wanted to quit 2nd day but a blast from the past in another dept stopped me in my tracks, though I’ve spent a good couple of weeks curious of the employers motives but got a job offer second week in for less hours which I jumped at the chance opposed to be lied to or mislead further.

I’ve doubted these less hours from new employer in the whole scary COLC but I don’t really want to work for an organisation who doesn’t write out policies what happens if an employee walks out of a shift one day and gets hit by a bus. Many ‘mumsnetters’ took joy in telling me what did I think a temp was, well it wasn’t to join a picky organisation in that case who when couldn’t be bothered to train someone the very basics of the job (you cannot have it both ways) and then pull them apart what 9 days later when then dealing with very confused and vulnerable clientele, saying you’ve made some roky mistake.

Itsnotchristmasyet · 30/10/2023 22:11

I think you need to give a job at least 1 month, preferably 3, before deciding.

The first week is the absolute worst.
The first couple weeks are tricky too because you’re still trying to get a grasp of the job etc.

A good company will start you on the easier jobs, rather than throw you in at the desk end straight away.

I just wanted to update...
Today was day 2 and it was MUCH better!
I was doing barista coffees after being shown what to do and really enjoyed the buzz of a fast paced environment doing lots of different coffees as it was so busy!
I'm hoping that like you all said yesterday was first day vibes, which is always rubbish as you don't know what your doing and get shown all of the easy boring jobs.
Thanks for everyone's advice will keep you all updated ☺️

Very pleased to read your update Smile

Falzarega · 31/10/2023 21:55

Glad it’s getting better OP!

With new jobs they often give you the crap tasks at first, someone has to do them and they want to make sure you’re not above mucking in with everyone.

Guttedme · 31/10/2023 23:26

Great. Hope it continues for you.
