Applying for a promotion into a management role.

I plan to apply for a team manager role that is becoming available now my manager has left.

My ex-manager has told me that I'm perfect for the role and that I have the skills. But, I'm not currently in a management role although my role is a complex role and I do unofficially undertake some management tasks and support team members.

So, how the heck do I sell myself and maybe compete against applicant that have that management experience already??

I feel like it's catch 22, they want mgmt experience but you can't get mgmt experience without someone giving you the job when you have no mgmt experience.

I really want this job, and I think I would be really good at it and I'll be gutted if I don't get it.

This is your management experience. Is it likely existing managers would apply for this as a sideways move? Surely most applicants will be in a similar position to you - i.e. not managers but with informal management experience.

My company pays well for what we are, so we usually get staff in who apply for similar level roles that they already have because the salary is higher.

I have been documenting the stuff I have done, outside of my day to day role, is this the sort of stuff I need to "big up"?

Yes - you need to look at the competencies specified in the job description, and make as much as you can of the skills and experience you have that evidence those competencies - use examples to show how you've used them.

Agree 100% with the other posters. Big up the things you are doing outside your core role. That’s exactly the kind of “stretch” evidence they Will be looking for.

Also ask your ex-manager to help review your application and with interview prep. They can help you hone your answers and how you talk about your work.

Thank you, I'll speak to my ex manager for help that's a good call.

The manager who will do the interviews is a tough nut. But I think they like me.
