Career job advice for DS

allnewname · 30/10/2023 16:17

DS 2 finished Uni a few months ago, completely discouraged with his experiences getting either a degree related job or any sort of job for that matter.
He and I often row, he's very defensive, doesn't like any of my suggestions, thinks I'm criticising him or interfering, and anyway the job market is very different from when I was jobhunting.
Where can he go for in-person support, job coaching or something? Can he access job centre support, he's not claiming any benefits at present as he's living at home. Any advice would be gratefully received, it's really impacting his mental health which is already taking a battering for other reasons. Thank you. X

His University should have a careers service which will support his for a certain amount of time after he has left. Or you could use the CDI website and and find a careers coach or adviser who can help you who is based locally.

I believe that he should be claiming universal credit if he is not working. Even if he receives no money, he should be entitled to claim his National Insurance "stamp" which goes towards other benefits including state pension.
He can claim on line
www.gov.uk
Search under universal credit
He should be invited to the job centre to provide his ID

Also
www.gov.uk
Find a job
Enter postcode or town or county
See jobs

His uni should also have a careers department

@allnewname What was the degree subject and what classification?

Could he try a sideways move and look for an apprenticeship? Does anything interest him? What about volunteering? If he has no motivation to do anything, it’s difficult to advise. Jobs won’t come looking for him. He could try a Morrisby test to look at what areas of work he might consider. Also hook up to the uni careers office. Did he do anything during his degree regarding work experience or go to careers fairs? someone with just a degree isn’t automatically employable.
