Can I be let go in probation?

Started a new job in a senior role
I'm half way through three month probation

Turns out there's a person here who does similar role to me who wanted my position but was told she'd need to do the competency work for it. Seems now they are working with it and the plan is for her to have the senior role also. Unsure if there's room for two of us as seniors tbh

Can the company let me go during this time in favour of having the employee who had been here prior to me and give her the role instead?

I'm feeling a bit shit about it all to be honest, can hear all the conversations happening around me (but never including me) where clearly the people in my team wanted her to get the role and not to take one someone new

Can't really afford to be let go from the job and don't feel I should be for this but don't know where I'd stand legally?

Yes they can.

Head down, focus on doing the best you can, ignore the gossip.

Show them what you can do.

This happened to me many years ago . The was just used as holiday cover for three weeks . When the person who was on holiday came back I was let go. The person who returned from holiday more or less admitted it to me that I was used .

Yes you can, that's the point of probation. If what you're hearing is true then they are not an ethical or trustworthy company to work for anyway.

They can but as others have said it's a horrible way to treat people if true.

Keep working hard and showing them your brilliance but look for other vacancies just in case.

Yes, you can, but I'd be really surprised if they really took you on expecting to do that. I'd have a straight talking conversation with your boss about what you've heard. The "staff" might think that could/should happen, but I'd be amazed if the organisation does.

I'm starting to get concerned I was really sold a lie with the company!
The person who is directly above me now appears to be applying for jobs also. It's all very confusing

Going to keep the head down and get on with it. Maybe speak to my direct manager if I catch him in person and just ask and say it's a bit concerning

A company did reach out to be about one but it would be a 10k pay drop and I don't know if I can afford to take that right now but I might need to get back in touch and keep that in the mix!

I feel your pain. How anxiety provoking is that.
I had similar thoughts when I took a job a yr ago.
I took it in good faith. One colleague was off long term sick.
Came back and soon started taking it out on me.
Roped in others who wanted her to get the jobTurns out she applied for the position.!!
I'm still here though and always on the look out for something else.
Head down and prove yourself.
I would ask my actual hiring manager though.
