I got a 2nd job at a factory which pays weekly but I'm struggling to understand the pay slip (see picture attached)

I don't understand the deduction of £61.40 from pay. Anyone got any ideas? Pls

Do you owe any tax from the previous year that they are collecting through your tax code? Or were you given any advance of wages?

worklikecrazytomakeit · 27/10/2023 03:37

I was not given advance wages at all & I am not aware of tax money owed.

Do you think is worth asking the payroll dept what that £61.40 deduction is?

Only you payroll dept can answer this.

There are legitimate reasons that pay could be deducted but they have to explain it to you and they can't make deductions without your consent. Even with your consent the deductions cannot take you under minimum wage for thrme hours worked.

Ask for an explanation and let us know here if it doesn't make sense.

Thanks, I will be sending an email to payroll 1st thing in the morning & I will keep u all posted.

Or is it possible for tax owed from self employment be taken of PAYE tax without one's consent?

ScratchedSkirtings · 29/10/2023 11:04

No, if you want your self employed tax collected from your employed job it’s done via your tax code, and you need to have ticked that box when you did your tax return. Then it would just be part of your tax deduction, not an extra thing.
You need to ask…

Did you start part way through their payroll month?
If it's a second job do you need to be in their pension scheme assuming you have one through your main employment?

burnoutbabe · 29/10/2023 11:09

Only your payroll can answer

It's not tax

Is it that you have been promised a net salary (some babies get this) so that can only be worked out once tax known.
Mir you get £100 net so they have to adjust your normal gross to achieve that.

I hate net payments at work -just say you get £1500 taxed rather than £1000 bonus (net)

burnoutbabe · 29/10/2023 11:10

Nannies not babies!

deafadp · 29/10/2023 11:22

I have asked the company and they said th person in charge is on holiday until Tuesday so I just have to wait 🙄

Thanks to you all for your replies

So finally spoke with payroll and the deduction is an error and all will be refunded today.

They missed my overtime payment for my 1st pay but paid it instantly when I called them & said it will be showing as deduction on my next pay and they probably forgot to stop the deduction.

I still need more help pls
Work said they will refund but haven't yet and they are saying they will only refund 4 weeks and now I am thinking it should be 5 weeks refund for the money deducted every week.
Here is the breakdown and story below

Paid weekly & I do overtime every week.

Week 1 work missed overtime payment & I called, it was paid instantly & told it will show as deducted on next weeks payslip.

Week 2, wages paid but £A + other taxes deducted from wages (I am thinking that this payslip should show 2 overtime(s) for week 1 and 2 and gross should include overtime for week 1 &2 and overtime for week 1 & other taxes deducted. (Deduction should have ended here)

Week 3, wages paid but £A + other taxes deducted from wages

This £A deduction went on till week 6

I called work & they said it was an error on their part and that £A x 4weeks will be refunded
But I am thinking the refund should be £A X 5weeks not 4weeks

Am I right?

burnoutbabe · 02/11/2023 20:56

4 weeks deduction.

Week 2 was a deduction of what you had previously been paid in cash but not hit payrol
So they put it into payslips 2 work out what you are owed, then take off the advance.

Week 3/6 deduction should be reversed . So 4 weeks makes sense

Thank you very much
