Fretting now about notice period.

Hi,

I started a temporary job just under two weeks ago that I'm now leaving for a perm role much closer to home, I would be a fool to let it go when things are up in the air where I am currently I really do feel.

I still haven't had contract through from temporary job which I'm starting to wonder contains more than my finish date as I didn't really understand on my first day when they said we're working on a contract so I'm now doubting myself, I cannot find a resignation policy or staff handbook on the whole entire subject of notice period although I have now seen something that say's no holiday is preferred during the first 3 months of employment. I have tried HR person but they out of office until next week and speaking to my Manager today, they've said can't help but would chase next week, along with quipping that one of my references remains outstanding to their knowledge which as I thought was the whole hold up with the contract after they said about it first. I'm dreading dropping the bombshell as I really don't know the manager very well.

I probably am being daft. If you read the following which I have from the brief summary provided before starting temporary job, would you be inclined to think one week notice?

"FTC: For approximately x weeks, although the org reserves the right to decrease or increase the 'contract' with the appropriate notice period of one week, in consultation with yourself"

The temporary job has a monthly payday and the summary supplied does not expressly state notice period if I were to leave.

Thanks for any help.

You haven't signed a contract so they can't hold you to anything, although they might be able to say starting work implied acceptance, but then you can argue you haven't seen the terms.

Just give them 1 weeks notice and think nothing more of it. Or send them an email saying no need to finalise a contract, I'm handing my notice in and xxx will be my last day.

Signing a contract had no relevance in law. If nothing else had been agreed then your notice is statutory notice. Which in the first four weeks is nil. So a weeks notice is more than adequate.

Thank you very much for the guidance, turns out I don’t think there was any contract on its way as higher management now said it is ‘open ending’ and I hadn’t realised how close the other temp is in securing another role themselves. I did wonder about the under 4 week statutory notice but thought maybe their summary however brief supersedes it in not actually referring to it.

Am I right in thinking (and if I were past the first 4 weeks) on a Monday they can give me notice that ends on a Friday? I regret the only times in the very distant past when I was made redundant I’ve never had to work notice.

Sorry for the boring thread.

If it's temporary its probably 1 week notice on either side. I dont think the 1 week is given Monday, finish on the Friday but it could be. Just tell them x will be your last day, regardless of how long it is, you haven't signed a contract yet.

Thank you, relived to finally get this over and done with, we've agreed I will work a week.

Massive thank you all.
