Any payroll people? Help an idiot

Another stupid issue from someone who really shouldn't be tring to run her own business!
I have my one employee (since 12 Feb), I am paying him fortnightly, have been using the HMRC payroll calculators to work out tax and NI. I am opting to make quarterly payments to HMRC as the amounts are so small. First payment is due 5 April.
When I pay HMRC do I pay them the total tax I have deducted in my employ, the total employee's NI, and the total employer's NI contributions?
Yes, you are correct, I am really thick. I have been plaguing the HMRC helpline for weeks now, so thought I'd give you lot the turn.
(And yes, I have changed my name recently so all the other really stupid questions were from me.)

Yes

BTW are you useing the HMRC CD rom?

Mouselady · 09/03/2008 11:44

Thanks for the straight answer and yes I am.
I realise this may not the best/easiest solution. Even my accountant (when she's not trying to avoid me) says I should save myself the worry and pay her a tenner a month extra.
However, I have really found over the past year that if I bring in someone to cover a task for me without having any knowledge of it myself I end up in a right old mess.
I would rather struggle along for a few months then hand it over knowing what the paperwork is about etc and how the system works.
Wow, you should've seen me trying to come to grips with SAGE 50 over the past few months. I think I may be banned from their helplines.

Yes, you should have a yellow paying in book, which has a section at the front for you to keep your records, and on the actual payslip there is a space for NI and paye amounts, then total.

You are not thick, it took me a year before i could send the wages to the bank online without having to phone the helpline in tears cos i'd messed it up again!!!

naturalblonde · 09/03/2008 11:46

ooh, sage helplines - aren't they great?!!
I lhate that you have to queue for so long that they even give you a choice of (crap) music to listen to.

KatyMac · 09/03/2008 11:46

It's dead easy with the CD
I pay on-line so no paying in book

I do not use Sage - I just made a spreadsheet & use that - it works for me

Online? You lairy things!
Maybe in September when my new business year starts.
It's likely I will have to register for VAT from then onwards so will probably need to buy in a lot more help (but as usual I'll have a go at cocking it up myself first!).
Thank you both.
Now off to do this week's spreadsheet for who's dropping/collecting kids each day, taking them riding, swimming classes, visiting elderlies in hospital, getting the shopping, walking the dog etc etc etc. That's more complicated than anything in business.

I have to say timetabling is a nightmare

Littlelapin write me a lovely excel thingie which does it all for me & it has halved my work each week

If you submit online this year you will get a credit (£100 this year) off your remittances for next year. And you will have to be online in a few years anyway - so might as well give it a go.

KatyMac · 09/03/2008 12:11

That's for your P14 & P35, isn't it?

I've had it for the last 2 yrs

ChasingSquirrels · 09/03/2008 13:18

yes sorry - I meant submitting year end returns, not the monthly stuff.

KatyMac · 09/03/2008 15:59

Just checking it wasn't something new

I like it when HMRC gives away free money
