How soon can I leave my new job?

I started a new job a few months ago and I’m really embarrassingly bad at it. It’s far more work than my previous role, far more stress and I’m really struggling with the constant demands. What is the shortest acceptable time people usually stay in jobs that are a bad fit for them?!

You can leave any time... don't feel bad, it happens.

I was due to start a job, had actually made them wait my company's three month notice period, and actually on the day I was due to start, I accepted an offer with another company.

It's life.

Tbh, if you have had a conversation with your line manager /supervisor and raised concerns then they should try to address these. Can they give you extra training or support ?
You were given the job as they thought you could do it. Are you sure this isn't just ' settling in ' issues ?
If you are adamant it's not for you then I'd go sooner rather than later. No point in hanging around. Do try and find another job first though. Just for a bit of security
But try not to let this knock your confidence

JetBlackSteed · 19/10/2023 21:13

Any time you want. They might not even make you work your notice period if you've not been there long.
It does happen that people realise they aren't a good fit.

My friend managed a week at her new job. She hated the toxic culture. She rang her old employer and they took her straight back.

Thank you. This is all really helpful feedback and advice. It isn’t a good fit and it’s bad for my confidence. There seems to be a bit of a sink or swim attitude so I don’t think training or support is available.

These days? Whenever you find a new job/are in a position to leave. In my twenties I typically changed jobs every couple of years and was regularly told I was a job hopper and it looked really bad and would damage my career path by those paragons of intelligence and life experience, HR/recruitment. Yes, like estate agents I know there's a handful of good ones. They're bloody rare though.

Post COVID? When we've all realised life is too short to be miserable for long? I can think of four or five colleagues who haven't lasted a year (this is in the north, in a profession where there aren't that many jobs and most are in the south). I'll be leaving my employer too as soon as I find a suitable job, I've been there just over a year. I'm planning my leaving email weekly to cheer me up in the meantime.

Kweenbee · 19/10/2023 21:45

Meant to add, in my experience if a job isn't working four months in or the culture is toxic, it's unlikely to improve. Unless there are any major changes like a merger, takeover, management buyout or wholesale replacement of the exec team. And they bring different problems.

I worked two months for a private medical company.

It got to the point I realised it was awful and I took 2 complaints about myself which would have been during training I wanted to cry. It came to light no work was being checked under training academy.

the boss agreed on a Tuesday after bank holiday in August the role was really trial by error and agreed to finish me using holiday after I said I couldn’t take no more.

Nictalea · 20/10/2023 11:38

Agree here with @Kweenbee . I was always pre DC and covid a long term employee.Post covid I've had two miserable jobs, one I stayed 10 months the other 8 months. Long enough to know I wasn't going to be happy. Fine line between managing the rubbish that comes with working and having to walk in a toxic, bullying etc (whatever the reasons may be..) if its the latter I'd far rather leave even if if the change is stressful the alternative is more stressful IMO.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 20/10/2023 11:41

I just left a job I was at exactly three months.

I had a thread counting down my last week.

It was savage.

AnSolas · 20/10/2023 11:49

If you are 100% sure you dont want to stay and you will not receive training or support leave asap. Start looking and interviewing so you can get a new job.
It is much easier to explain a 3-6 month stint at a job as a bad fit than it is a year+ as that looks a little like you jumped before the push.

You need to be careful how you explain why you are leaving in your interview and the reason should not be able to roll into your new job. An easy one is that the "role was not as discussed /reorganised and that it is aiming your career away from the direction the new job will send you.... "

Then check your contract for your notice period and once you get your new contract give notice.

I've just left a job after 2 weeks ! With no back up plan as it totally ruined my mental health . Currently looking for a part time job whilst I put myself back together . There's no right or wrong answer op and you don't owe an employer anything.

Lilybeds · 20/10/2023 18:20

@Batmansmummy A close friend has just done this, said she knew pretty much straight away that she'd made a mistake so left at the end of her first week. She's in the process of registering with a temp agency whilst she looks for something permanent. These things happen, good luck with your job hunt!

Changingplace · 20/10/2023 19:09

I started a new job in May and I’ve been looking again since about June 😁 haven’t found the right thing yet but I’ll be out of the door the second I do!

Babyroobs · 20/10/2023 19:10

I left one after 5 weeks recently !! I don't regret it for a minute !

Same here, was having such bad anxiety attacks within a few days that I handed in my notice after 2 weeks. They still made me work 2 weeks notice, it was the longest two weeks ! Looking back i should have just gone off sick.

coxesorangepippin · 20/10/2023 19:14

As soon as you like

You owe them nothing

I knew as soon as I sat at my desk it wasn't for me gutted I left my previous job as I loved it but they were making my team redundant 🤦🏻‍♀️

Batmansmummy · 20/10/2023 19:16

@Babyroobs that's exactly what happened to me I wasn't sleeping at night and the panic attacks were horrendous! I just left at the end of the day and emailed to say I couldn't return ! The most annoying part was that it took 6 weeks of screening before o could start to only last 2 weeks !

shiftshock · 20/10/2023 19:21

Left a new role after 4 weeks- hated it. I'm going back to my old job. It's been stressful but I don't regret my decision one bit. Life is too short and this kind of thing happens more than you might think.

It is horrible isn't it. I felt a bit stupid but emailed my old boss and went back to my previous role, but think I would have just left anyway even without that option.
