Leaving before end of notice period

I'm at the end of my tether in a job I hate. I'm 6 weeks into a 12 week notice period.
The reason for leaving is to move to a less stressful role and they want me to join earlier if possible.
I made this request and it was verbally agreed I could leave early if they recruited. They have done this and I've now made a formal request to leave early, but still allowing for a two handover for my successor, which I think is a very reasonable request, however I've been totally ignored. However yesterday I discovered another staff member with the same contractual conditions is going to be allowed to leave on the date they requested, much sooner than 12 weeks.
The business I'm leaving have pushed me to the brink and I feel this is another kick in the guts when all I've tried to be is fair and reasonable.
Im going on holiday for half term and I am considering not returning for my last month at work as I just don't feel happy to carry on when I'm treated with such disdain(and have been for 16 months) The stress is getting to be unbearable.
Question is what is the worse that could happen? I won't owe them any money, they won't owe me and my successor actually starts on 6th November so they won't be left short staffed!
I need some good advice please

Do you need them as a reference?

Do you need to do a handover of a specific role to the new person starting 6/11 or is it not that sort of role?
Do you have annual leave left?

It's just a handover / introduction. They would be able to pick the role up without it, as there are numerous work instructions

Go sick? If the stress is unbearable I'm sure you could get signed off for 4 weeks

mummyh2016 · 19/10/2023 11:44

@toottootmummy I doubt they'll do anything however if the new job doesn't work out either and you need your current job to supply a reference they may refuse. Also depending on how funny they are they might make you wait until the last minute for your P45 so you may pay emergency tax at first.

If you're okay with this then don't go back.

Type up a manual then go to your doctor and get signed off with stress.

I don't think that you can go off sick from one job and be working in another?

It sounds like a difficult situation Op. I would consider giving them your leaving date in writing and then sticking to that.
