Need top tips!

I am starting a new job in a few weeks. I have career changed recently so I’m looking at it as a chance to really learn and grow. But I also want to be in a position to be promoted within a year or two. I know I’m not disclosing the job/sector which makes it difficult , but can people share tips for making that more likely? I know working really hard is part of it but my experience is that that only takes you so far; visibility in the organisation seems to be even more important! What would be your top tips?

Working really hard is only useful if it's on the right things that increase your value and make you worth promoting.

Difficult without any context of sector or level but:

Get crystal clear goals what does good look like? What about great/outstanding? How would you and your boss know that the ball had crossed the line? It's worth spending time making sure that goals or targets are objective ie something that can be measured, not subjective- so increase x by y %, not "improve/grow" or other vagueness. If there are no measures, what would be a good proxy (get this agreed) eg if your role is to improve expertise, what would improved expertise look like? Greater levels of authority or autonomy? Higher staff retention? More promotions ? Find something to measure and measure it!

How would I know if I am on track to achieve goals? What milestones , data, staging posts would tell me?

What are my boss's goals? What can I do to help them achieve? The "making your boss look good" thing is real!

What are the hygiene factors or basics you have to get right every time?

What are your teams goals and how can you help achieve them?

What extra curricular type things are valued in the organisation eg volunteering, coaching and mentoring- it goes without saying that none of this should be at the expense of hitting targets
