Job rebanding

Breakingpoint1961 · 13/10/2023 05:45

I have just had my position re evaluated up a band. I have now been told I have to meet with the manager to talk through my competencies due to the re banding. Is this normal practice?

I was obviously working above the previous band, hence the upgrade.

Can anyone help please?

Your job has been re-evaluated, not your performance. In essence this usually happens when a job changes over time in respect of what is expected and become more complex or have a wider span, hence the regrading. Therefore it sounds like as you are in post and it hasn't changed so significantly recently you haven't been made to reapply for it.

But what they are doing is correct and sensible. Sitting down and discussing the updated job description and being clear what is required and your objectives. If you were previously operating (satisfactorily) at that level then there shouldn't be anything to worry about. However, the job being regraded up doesn't mean you were performing at that level

Thank you for your response. I am not concerned in the least re my ability to do the job. My concern is that the whole process has taken far too long, and this will set it back even longer.

I've also been told it will be with my line manage AND another senior manager, is my line manager not competent to do this solo?

No it’s not about your manager being incompetent, it’s about not one person making a decision about something so crucial, 2 sets of eyes to discuss so that there is no bias.

You seem very worried about them recognising your good work and wanting to make sure that you are fairly compensated. It looks like this will result in a pay rise and a rise in status within your organisation.
Embrace it as a positive rather than a negative.

@MrsNandortheRelentless thank you for your response.

I have already received the upgrade, the level I have been working at is reflected in this, my JD reflects it too, and my line manager/team value me highly.

My issue is, the time this additional meeting will add to the already (ridiculously) lengthy process. This will now not go through this months pay.

It's not very clear what you mean OP - you seen to contradict yourself re whether you're already being paid the payrise or not.

Breakingpoint1961 · 13/10/2023 07:21

@LuckOfTheDrawer I have had my position re banded. I have received the decision that is has been agreed. It cannot be sent to HR until this meeting has taken place, therefore HR/payroll are unaware, this is what I am being told.

I think I'd ask them in writing for the start date of your re-banded position in that case, then any extra pay should be backdated to then.

Congratulations overall though - it's good that your employer is recognising the work you do.

Are you concerned about the gap until you receive extra pay, and / or that they might heap extra responsibilities onto you?

RausageSoul · 13/10/2023 07:46

I would have thought if the role is being rebanded then they'd expect to advertise it as such and then interview. Certainly the case in my directorate (civil service) so I don't think you can grumble at being asked to at least chat about it with management?

MrsNandortheRelentless · 13/10/2023 08:28

Are you NHS by any chance? The lengthy process sounds very NHS.
Sympathies for this, it is so annoying.
The only silver lining will be in the backdated pay that you will receive.
And from me too, congrats on this, it really is an achievement. You must be working really hard. 💐

Breakingpoint1961 · 13/10/2023 08:54

@MrsNandortheRelentless yes you guessed it NHS. They have explicitly stated that any back pay will only go back to when the form was submitted.

OP posts:
LuckOfTheDrawer · 13/10/2023 10:11

I'd push for the meeting to enable form submission in that case.

MrsNandortheRelentless · 13/10/2023 11:32

Ahh yes, I’ve been through rebanding with the NHS. Tis a challenge and a half.
The fact that you have your manager on side though is brilliant, I did it all myself. Had my manager to persuade on top of the rest of the chain, wasn’t easy.
