Civil Services Jobs Question

So, we all know that recruitment can take forever - at every stage. Where do you stand in terms of job acceptance, for example, say I was offered one job as provisional and I started the security clearance process, and in the meantime I was offered another civil service role in a different department at a higher grade? Would it be frowned upon to then accept the second? Are you ‘locked in’ to a particular job once security clearance starts? Or are you free to accept another up until the point you agree a start date and hand your notice in for current role (non civil service)?

I am not in this position, but I could see it easily happening, as I’ve applied for many roles.

Many thanks!

You're not locked until you've got an employment contract. The vetting process, depending on the role within civil service, can take a very long time and so it's not unusual for applicants to pull out in favour of another job that doesn't require it.

The vetting process is done by an entirely different arm of the civil service, so there's absolutely nothing keeping you locked in to a contract you haven't even signed yet. It really can take an age though, so if you accept another position try to get this second ball rolling as much as you can before you pull out of the first offer. That way you may be able to keep the same clearance (if it's completed in time) as it can be transferred between jobs once you've been checked, but you might have to rejoin at the back of the queue if it doesn't get fully completed before you pull out.

Even once you've signed the contract though, it's not difficult to switch roles in the CS. And don't worry too much about being "frowned upon". Do what works for you!

Thank you both, that’s really helpful.
