So I'll explain my situation right now and I don't know what I want the outcome of this thread to be.. I guess just to talk and not keep it in.
30 years old
2 kids (4 & 5) but no other family at all ( they have all passed away)
Renting a property in the countryside at a very affordable price thankfully
Disabled on PIP and my 5 year old gets DLA for his disability.
I drive a car but can't do any work involving my car as it's a Motability car.

I earn enough money to keep us above water but times are getting tough and I wonder how people on less are managing I really do. I don't want to be like this anymore. I want to make something for us or at least be able to save something for my kids future.
I've worked out I would need to earn 40k a year minimum to enable us to have less worries.

It's hard finding work that I can do as it needs to be from home the majority of the time for when I have my bad days as I can still go on the computer or phone.

I have learning and processing disabilities but I can read, write and I can use a computer.

I can work from 5am til 11pm so my hours are very flexible.

I'm not sure if I have any "skills"

I used to work with the department for work and pensions as an admin officer and found I could do that easily.

I could also learn new things if there was an adult course I could do.
Anyone got any ideas on things available out there? work I could do from home or training opportunities?

Thank you for reading x

What qualifications do you have and do you have a job now?

Countryliving0180 · 11/10/2023 16:50

@Overthebow

Just stopped working as a carer due to house move.
I have a NVQ level 2 in Animal care but that is all, I was doing my level 3 once but had to quit as they couldn't get me a accomodation like they had promised me

40k will improve your situation or maintain your status quo?

EveryKneeShallBow · 11/10/2023 17:07

There are some really good online courses available, free or reasonable. The Open University website has some, and their degrees are very good. I think you’ll be best to get some qualifications first in order to go for really worthwhile work. Good luck.

Countryliving0180 · 11/10/2023 18:06

@loseweightpleasegod supposedly improve. I'm on about 32k right now to include the family's benefits (sickness) so an extra roughly 8k would be an extra 600 a month which would either be disposable income or savings which yes I'd say would improve life at the moment. At the moment I can afford the bills and then have about £300 - £400 a month to spend on anything such as days out, treats for kids, birthdays, Christmas, clothing, extra household bits etc but it means that I don't get to really save any. For example I was doing good saving up abit every month got £300 in savings and then my oven broke so had to buy another.. before that it was my hoover. My laptops just broken but I can't afford another so I'm borrowing one for the time being but it would be nice if I got to have some savings.

I'm not poor, I feel very lucky but in also not able to save or go on holiday or worry about what I buy, I look around for the cheapest deals, I don't have a lot of stuff and live a minimalist lifestyle as much as possible.

@EveryKneeShallBow thank you I shall have a look! It's just hard when you don't know what you could actually do so you can go into training that's useful :D

What about call centre work? That can often be from home and I know people who just do 3 evenings a week.
Or doing a course in book keeping or finance?

MrsMiagi · 11/10/2023 23:12

I don't know of call centre work that will pay 40k. Usually need qualifications or alot of experience in a particular area.
Though OP sounds financially well off right now, with disposable income!

Countryliving0180 · 12/10/2023 06:20

@MrsMiagi I would say yes I am financially well off BUT if I ever had to move home I'd be fcked as a example rent in my area +20miles for a 2 bed house or flat is £800 if you can find one available.
I pay £450 a month so I'm saving a lot of money but as I said I never seem to be able to save anything, it all goes, obviously they're are people in worse positions but it doesn't change the fact that I want to be able to save for my kids future, or atleast save my son's DLA for him and my kids child benefit so they can have something to start a life with. I don't want to die and leave them with nothing having not tried to make something of myself.

@Jethia I will look into this because technically it might at least be able to make me an extra 5k a year or something :) x

Log everything you spend each month and see where you can make savings. While you have cheap rent make the most of that it's an amazing position to be in. If you have to take on more work, fair enough, but I'd opt to reduce outgoings before I reduced time with my kids by working more than I need to (no judgement; I worked full time and was doing an apprenticeship before I went on maternity leave and will be going back to that next year because I want to progress in my career and need the qualification to help me do that).
I earn a bit more than the salary you want but have high outgoings so I know what you mean about it being hard to save. Everything costs so much more now!
It's worth looking at life insurance too if you haven't already so you have a safety net for your kids.
I think DWP had work from home jobs advertised recently and websites like Indeed will have lots of jobs listed that are flexible and could suit what you are looking for.

You said you have learning and processing disabilities, and that you needed accommodations for your NVQ. Where specifically do you struggle, versus where do you find things straightforward? That would help in narrowing down what will work for you specifically.
