Lied at Interview - how can I rectify this?

This is following on from another thread I did where I asked for advice on how to prevent prospective employers asking last employers for a reference. Namely because I was threatened there three times once by my line manager after she was sent an email I had written to the Well-being lady. She basically took me to a room and told me that she will deal with things differently outside work.

It was the most horrendous place and in the end I was too frightened to go back. The Hr team are beyond corrupt and gleefully shout across the office how they prevent people getting their future jobs elsewhere.

So today I had an interview and I think it went really well. I'm actually quietly confident I will be in with a great chance of getting the job.

They asked me why I left my old position and I said it was a temp job with no training or future prospects. The thing is it was temporary to me when I saw the way they sack people Willy nilly and pretend to give people jobs but use failed your probation as a way to not have to pay pensions etc.

The truth is I was terminated as I could not get a doctors appointment by the deadline they gave me and because I wanted to document absences via email, namely because the phone was never answered and because I was frightened and did not trust anyone there.

Do you think I gave blown it now if I do get the job? They seemed such nice, normal people, I just blurted out the lie.

I also do not want the old place knowing anything about where I go to be honest as they spread peoples info around and there is no confidentiality whatsoever.

You got to do what you can to survive.

I don’t worry, no shame about ex employers knowing where I’ve ended up. I’ve a couple dodgy but they’ve never hurt me after employment, not in their interest.
One even responded years without doing previously to the point I thought it could be faked by new employer. After all today it is very hard to see copies of references.

I and 100+ people recently went for a job full-time, immediate start yes this month at national minimum wage; I was one of two people successful to eventually start November on a zero-hours contract to a minimum of 18 hours per week at £10.50 (totally different to the job ad that was posted)

One step at a time. If they offer you the job, at that stage they ask you for references. Give them your previous employer, not the nightmare job (because that was a temporary one - presumably you didn't work there long?).

focus on the prize, getting the new job, manage it carefully - you have a right to state which employers you want to be your referees. Unless you're going into a teaching role where they're a lot more exacting about references, you can select who you want.

With Data Protection nowadays your new prospective employers will take what you offer them and shouldn't dig around trying to find a scoop on you - they just want the basics to tick the box.

Most employers nowadays only give the very basic info, dates and role title.

Relax, i'm a job hopper (although hopefully settled down) and a) you can USUALLY chose who you put down and b) i've never had a reference checked, even if they were quite firm on asking me for names, they then never actually followed it up. I've had 8 jobs in 5yrs, plus two temp roles to fill gaps. I should add, i havent had anything to hide, perhaps one job where i didnt perform great and left very quickly due to toxic bullying colleague so they wouldnt have sung my praises, so i wasnt concerned about reference checking, it just hasnt happened.

Oh thanks so much everyone! I didn't know you could choose!

I think in previous jobs applications last employer was demanded!

Anyway it's all true what so have said. I do not want those thugs knowing anything about me. I called the ICO to see if my complaint warranted a report.

The man was nice enough, but it seemed as usual these companies can get away with just being advised, despite the damage they have caused to an employee.
