8 hours on feet???

Smallngrumpy · 04/10/2023 10:47

I just interviewed for retail position where I will be on feet 8 hours a day. Position is till work, no chairs etc.
Does anyone do this and is it ok or do you find it physically hard???
I appreciate some may find this easy, but Im older and returning to work after kids, so very aware how unfit i am.
Having a major wobble about this and may all be for nothing if Im not successful.

Standard for retail in my experience. Its hard to start with but you get used to it

You will be fine, might find your fitness improves, get some really comfy shoes and you’ll get a break? I’m on my feet for 12 hour shifts at a time it’s hard going and I avoid sitting if I can as once you sit it’s so much harder to get up. Keeps you active but worth trying to see how you get on?

Normal in retail. You'll be entitled to one or two breaks during that time but yes it will be tiring...depends on the shop but I used to work in a coffee shop and would hit my Fitbit step target before my first break!

First few weeks you will feel sore and achy but it does get better.

Done this in travel, retail and catering.... pretty normal.

Very normal for retail, catering, hospitality roles.

i did it as a teenager and being on feet for 8 hours is not the issue, it's standing in 1 place for 8 hours that's the killer. I worked for superdrug and left as it actually damaged my back- i'm 40 now and still have trouble with it

RaininSummer · 04/10/2023 19:06

I think not being able to sit when at the till is really bad. I can't stand for hours without pain and it's a great way to varicoise veins.

toomuchfaster · 04/10/2023 19:12

Normal for retail, hospitality, most caring professions too!

Thefacethatlaunchedathousandchips · 04/10/2023 19:14

I've done it and it is doable. You might need compression tights! I wore them even at 18/19 when working in retail.

I actually prefer hospitality and did that in my late thirties. It's better as you are always running around. I find standing still harder

YouAndMeAndThem · 04/10/2023 19:16

Most retail jobs require lots of other jobs except just being on the till so you find you're not just standing in one place, you're also stacking shelves, cleaning, helping customers etc. It is the standing on one spot that is the killer, my legs get sore if I've not been walking around.

Smallngrumpy · 05/10/2023 08:10

It is just tills, I asked. You can prob walk about a bit doing returns etc and putting stuff in different places, but the majority is stood behind a counter on tills.
I am a bit older in my 50s and not worked for a while. Suppose I will have to see how it goes.
