Festive role- Tesco

savysaver23 · 04/10/2023 10:05

Morning,

I have been accepted and done and induction for a festive job 10pm till 6am for Thursday and Fridays. Only problem is i also have another full time role.

I have spoken to one of the mum's who works in a different Tesco who says they do twilight hours. I finish at 3pm two days a week.

My question to mumsnet is should i ask to swap hours now before i start my role. I did have apprehensions about it tbh but i needed the extra money, but i will be up for around 48 hours in one stretch. I think the twilight hours would suit best and i can do 6pm till 12am or 1am.

Any advise on how to approach this is very welcome thank you

The problem is, supermarkets need certain people in certain roles at certain times of day/night. So if those are the hours you applied for and accepted then those are the hours they need you for. I doubt they have any obligation to change the hours after you already accepted the role with those hours. Recruitment costs a lot of time and money so you've just wasted theirs really.

They are also recruiting for this time period, i would assume it would be an easy ish switch, does anyone who has worked or is working for tesco have some advise, thanks

Why did you accept a role for hours you can't do?

greyandwindy · 04/10/2023 13:46

I am involved in recruitment at my job. I would appreciate a candidate letting me know at the earliest opportunity that the hours we had agreed didn't suit them.

Contact them and let them know that you appreciate their time and after agreeing you have noticed that the hours offered don't quite suit you due to xyz, be clear on the hours you can do and then they can see if it works for them.
They are under no obligation to accommodate you but if you don't ask you won't get.
This way you and tesco will be clear on what you can do, it's better than waiting until the start date and saying you can't do it.
The worst they will say is no, just be upfront.
Good luck

You'll be up for 48 hours in one stretch?

Will you be driving, looking after young children, operating machinery, dealing with personal data etc in this stretch, especially in the middle and towards the end of it?

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 04/10/2023 13:47

I don't think you can . I'm in exactly in the same predicament taken on a role I can't now fulfill, I've asked for flexibility only to be basically been told tough , that's what you signed up for this is what we need you for

sodthesodoff · 04/10/2023 13:47

But... when did you realise this? You saw the job advert. You applied. You presumably interviewed. Accepted the job. Did the induction. And now it strikes you as a bad idea?

Yes they might also be advertising for a different shift but presumably they'll then need to hire someone for the shift you're vacating

I don't see you coming out of this looking good.

Thank you for your messages everyone. I did apply for the role yes. But I ticked a box that said between 7.75 hours and 11.75. I was then given a contract for 21 initially. I said no to this and said yes to two days. Yesterday I was then given the two days and they are consecutive. I spoke to my husband who said it wouldn’t be sustainable. I think I could do it. I had two babies 11 months apart I know what no sleep is like. But he also pointed out I would be no good to anyone like this. I did ask and they said no these are the hours. I think I am just going to politely decline as I don’t want to waste more of there time and if a role comes up for the hours I proposed please call me.

You should ask.
I have worked twilight and it's very popular with college age students as it allows them to go home to bed then college the next day. I didn't work at Tesco but Twilight was 5-10pm so not as many hours as you'd like.
