Redundant after 2m, anything I can do?

Received invite yesterday to discuss the future of my role, confirmed redundant today 😕 being paid pay in lieu of notice. They explained there's just not the level of work expected so am being let go and they are not following a full redundancy process due to my length of service. They were lovely about it to be fair so I can't grumble about how they handled it.

There is another woman doing the same role I was recruited for but she's been there for 6 years and it's clear she's being geared up for a promotion anyway into a more responsible role, which is fair enough.

Am I right in thinking there's bugger all I can do here and just suck it up as I have only 2m service?

Am gutted i really liked it too 😭

Happened to me too after 4 months. Nothing you can do. So sorry.

Not really I’m afraid. Sounds like you haven’t passed your probation if there isn’t the levels of work expected rather than your role actually being made redundant

Did you feel like you were underperforming? Or have I read it wrong?

I read level as a measure of quantity rather than quality

I thought I was doing ok, got some things wrong but manager said that was to be expected as it was early days. Nothing about performance mentioned just that the work they were expecting hasn't come off. If I'm honest I could tell it maybe wasn't as manic as was said in my interview ☹️

Oh I've just had an email saying they will pay me a month notice rather than a week to "hopefully give you a bit of breathing space while you look for something" and they will give me a good reference, so at least that's something, although that nice message makes me even more upset about having to go 😞

To me this reads as they are being honest with what's gone wrong, rather than just let you go after 2 months which they could have. Assuming they don't have any other openings, and as you said they do have one person doing the role, so the second person needed position is made redundant, what else can you and they do. Only thing I would return to them on is if its possible to say you took a short contract role , when putting it on cv as it may look like you were let go/sacked , or if you can get reference now which describes what occurred, just so there is no negatives on your cv going forward.

I think you’ve just been unlucky sounds like the volume of work they were expecting hasn’t materialised

I’d offer to work your notice you never know

but obviously leave at no notice if you secure another job

Redundantandgutted · 29/09/2023 15:16

Thanks everyone. I offered to work my notice, more because I feel a bit lost right now but theres no hope of the extra work coming in i dont think. They've also offered me the chance to appeal but again im assuming thats probably futile.

I'll just go and lick my wounds and hope maybe in the future they'll remember me if they recruit again. They said they don't put reasons for leaving its just dates, so I can say what I like, think I will go for it just being a temp role. I didn't think of that so thank you tooold x

I wouldn't work my notice. You'd be miserable. Take the breathing space they've given you. Have a short break. Start looking for a new role. Use that time for your future benefit, not theirs.

It's bad luck but it sounds like that's all it is. No reflection on you. Hope you find something else soon.

There's not enough work.

Sorry but sounds like an excuse.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 02/10/2023 09:16

I agree with @Jammylou , it does sound like an excuse.

Sadly these days lots of companies including where I’ve worked in the past give redundancy rather than going through correct HR procedures.

You’ve only been there 2 months, not even probation passed.

I’d have a good think what you want to do and then look around or do it now. You have a buffer of a month’s salary.

Good luck.
