Job saying working hours are 8.30 to 5.30 ....is this common? Normally it's 9 to 5.30 even 9 to 5...

How many hours per week and how long is your lunch break?

ilovebrie8 · 25/09/2023 17:28

that is the working hours 5 days per week start at 8.30 finish at 5.30, 1 hour for lunch....when did hours become so long?

when you factor a commute on top it's long day leave home at 7am get home at 7pm...

think i'll pass, i'd not mind of it was remote but factoring in a commute nope...
i think these hours are poor...unless they offer remote working which they aren't

Well if you have an hour for lunch that's a 40 hour week which is still common in some industries.
It depends if that's the norm for the sector your looking at.

UsingChangeofName · 25/09/2023 17:45

What photio said.

It is unusual to have an hour for lunch, but, by doing so, you are needing to make up the hours by starting earlier or finishing later.

It depends on the industry as to how many hours a normal working week is. Lots of people work 37.5 (ie 5 x 7.5 hours) but lots of people work quite a bit more than 40, too.

SaltyGod · 25/09/2023 17:51

It doesn’t strike me as particularly long, I’m surprised you’re turning down an offer due to 30 mins a day.

I officially do 9-6pm with an hour for lunch but in reality I do more due to the nature of the role (international teams). I’m happy with the arrangement as they flex for me when I need it.

Perhaps you could ask for a shorter lunch break in exchange for an earlier finish or later start? Same hours but less drawn out.

ilovebrie8 · 25/09/2023 17:52

It's not been std where I've worked before and I've worked in a number of sectors, you do work extra at times but the core hours are not usually this more like 9.5.30/9 to 5....that has been my experience.🙂

My most recent job is 8:30 to 17:30 and I completely resent that extra hour per day!

For me it makes ALL the difference. One of the factors in me looking for another position to be honest.

ilovebrie8 · 25/09/2023 17:58

I haven't got an offer to turn down, I was just sent the job and I was surprised at the hours they stated...not my experience to date of hours

I don't mind them for remote working but given location i'd have 1.5 hours commute each way so it's not what I am after....

The hours are not flexible either

OP posts:
Chasingsquirrels · 25/09/2023 17:59

Our standard hours are 7.75 worked per day, with an hour unpaid lunch which has to be taken as a break.

ilovebrie8 · 25/09/2023 17:59

exactly @RunningUpThatBuilding it does make a difference that extra half hour...

even more so when you add on a commute

it makes ALL the difference I agree...i can see why you are looking for another position....it's NOT the norm in my experience

I've avoided applying for roles with times like these, it's too long. I do 9-5.30 now WFH I can't imagine adding a commute into the mix unless it was for a lot more money. Tbh probably not even then.

RunningUpThatBuilding · 25/09/2023 18:04

I fully WFH however I hate the extra hour per day none the less!

It just makes the working day so much longer.

Only issue is - it is difficult to find jobs that are fully WFH - most are hybrid and I don't want to go into an office.

I am in the same boat...I am trying to find a fully remote job but they are thin on the ground now.

This is what I did in my last role 9 to 5.30 fully remote, the thought of 8.30 to 5.30 plus a long commute nope even if the salary was a lot more...

I was sent the job I didn't apply and was shocked when i saw the hours and that it wasn't remote 😑

I know it makes it a long day even without commuting!

I don't want to go into an office either but it's harder to find fully remote jobs now...

Just have to keep looking felt deflated when I saw that today 🙄

I've noticed hours creep up in the last few years. I'm 40 hours per week too (9 - 6) but wfh some of the week.

I sometimes don't do the full 8 hours because it's just too long to concentrate properly. There is no way I'd do it with a commute every day, I'd be out from 8am - 7pm.

ilovebrie8 · 25/09/2023 19:33

It’s a long day to keep alert and with the commute it’s a non starter …even wfh it’s a long day…

OP posts:
FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 25/09/2023 19:40

I wouldn't want to work that many hours now. My hours are 8-4 so I also wouldn't go for a job that wasn't flexible regarding start and finish times either.

ilovebrie8 · 25/09/2023 19:47

Love your username@FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee !!
am giving it a swerve …
any pointers on fully remote jobs?

thebluehen · 25/09/2023 19:51

Look at charity jobs for fully remote jobs.

Do you need to have Charity experience or does it not matter @thebluehen ?

I work 8-5:30 with an unpaid hour lunch. Honestly it’s too much for me, but it’s standing up and dealing with the public all day in a freezing environment. My last role was 8-4 (or equivalent, WFH if doable etc) with paid lunch whenever I could fit one in (usually al desko while working) and I found it a lot easier, mentally and physically. I’m not sure if it’s the constant people or the hours or the cold but it means I’m useless when I get home.

Onthegrid · 26/09/2023 08:41

Our office hours are 9-5.30 with a 30 min lunch, not really flexible, max 15 mins and that is discouraged.
I worked for home for 3 years (pandemic and after) starting at 8 and doing at least 8 hours before 6pm which worked perfectly for me. Needing to be in an office for a fixed period of time with one break seems counterproductive to me, and I know I get less done.
As even part time wfh is now discouraged I am looking to move on now.
My DD has much better hours with wfh for a few days a week so the jobs are still out there.
