New job while pregnant

Hi,

I am 27 weeks pregnant.

I've lost my current job because of this (was on contract, so nothing I can do about this!) so finish just before my baby is due.

I need another job.. I have an interview tomorrow, but haven't told the prospective employer I'm pregnant (It's going to be obvious in the interview)

Should I say something before I go? Just leave them work it out? wait until the baby is here before looking for a new job?

Am really confused over what to do!

thanks!

I'd just go anyway - it's always good experience and they might be so wowed by you that they won't mind - what do you do?

Congrats btw

Can you not have a few months off and claim maternity allowance? To be honest, I'd probably wait before looking for a new contract.

Youcannotbeserious · 05/03/2008 11:24

Thanks Wisteria....... I'm an industrial chemist...

Bramshott - I've applied for MA and I should be able to claim it, but that only pays around £400 per month and I'm going to struggle to live on that

youcannotbeserious I'd wait. You'd only be entitled to MA anyway once you go on maternity leave as you wouldn't have been with this employer long enough, so actually the only benefit you'd get is a few weeks pay now, particularly if it would be another short contract and therefore there may not be a job to go back to.

Bramshott · 05/03/2008 11:38

Why not see them anyway, but be upfront once you get there and say "I am looking for a job to start in xxxx month" (whenever you want to return to work). I assume you are looking for a job for after the baby is here, if you current contract takes you up until the due date?

Yes, MA is not much, but I assume you want to take a bit of time off with the baby, so being a freelancer or contract worker, it's probably the only option? Is it your first baby? Things and priorities can change, and I'd be a little wary about accepting something now which ties you into anything for when it's here.

God, I sound bossy this morning!

if its for a permanent position it might be worth applying for and seeing if they will hold the job for you - I suppose it depends how easy it is to get industrial chemists.

Kewcumber · 05/03/2008 11:41

I think I would be inclined to tell them before you go but not give them time to cancel (just in case they think you;re fab in the interview) so ring HR or email someone in the morning of the interview.

Go fir it! someone I know started a new job at 7 months pregnant, went on mat leave after 4 weeks and had 7 months off before she came back. But she was by far the best candidate so they were happy to take her on even though she effectively didn't properly start for 8 months!

titchy · 05/03/2008 11:49

Oh and do tell them - it might be obvious to you but they might just think you're fat!!!

Youcannotbeserious · 05/03/2008 11:53

titchy!

Yes, I am planning on staying here until the baby is due.

I guess I'll have to take some time off (yes, it's my first - am I really that obviously green!???????!) so I have applied for MA.

But, I can't live for long on that, so I need to go back to work sooner rather than later.

OK, I took your advice... I've told them that I'm PG and that I might not be available to start work until August / September.

They've asked me to come along for the interview anyway...

Thanks for the advice, feel better about tomorrow now!
