Huge fuck up today

And I’m still on probation. 😭 In my job you have to be signed off by supervisors in different areas before you are allowed to do it alone. Today I completed a task that I have not been signed off on (and completely screwed it up) by mistake. I’ve been signed off to produce designs in area A. I had a request come through for A but with a tiny bit of C. I didn’t realise that C meant it needed to be put through as a new task type. To make it worse one of my fundamental calculations was ever so slightly out so the whole thing is wrong. I have to confess all of this to my boss tomorrow morning. Help!

You'd expect this slap on the wrist ;-) we're all allowed one major F UP ticket. You've used yours :-P now get some sleep tonight, enjoy your tennis game, and good luck in your new job 👍 😀

Yes. But if it's the type of job with lots of scope for fuck ups then you should be allowed them more regularly. I'm pleased it all turned out ok OP!!

I’m so glad it’s over @HugeFuckUp ! All done and don’t worry about it now. It will be totally forgotten about down the line.

Hope you can relax tonight and maybe have a large glass of wine to recover! 🍷

Well done OP. Get some sleep to be honest I don't think they handled it well. You didn't deserve a 'telling off' and I'm disappointed they treated you like that.

Agreed. We are all human and we all make mistakes, we are not robots. And you should be applauded for your transparency and integrity. Anyway, happy for you that it's over OP

I agree. Seems very heavy handed, particularly for a new employee.

I was running a disposal of a company when I worked in M&A. It was critical to keep the parties confidential so that potential bidders didn't know how many and which parties were in the auction in order to achieve the highest price.

Working stupidly long hours, I managed to accidentally send a document to the wrong party so they knew the identity of the (only) other bidder. Massive fuck up that could have derailed the whole process (and our fee). My managing director thanked me for being honest and said not to worry as it would increase the competitive tension (which wasn't entirely true but made me feel better).

That's how genuine mistakes should be treated. We're all human and mistakes happen. Not a double boss bollocking dragged out over two days.

Everyone makes mistakes and mistakes are expected while an employee is learning the job. I've line managed many employees, mistakes are no problem as long as the person shows integrity, admits the mistake and makes an effort to learn.
