Shift work with family?

Does anyone do shift work with dc? I've applied for a job that on a 5453 rota (5 on, 4 off etc) for a company that runs 24/7. This is massively daunting as I've previously only worked in office roles (9-5) pre kids or school based work since (TA and currently a teacher) so always been home for dinner/bed/weekends and holidays.

I'd love to hear the pros and cons of changing to shift work instead, and how it works for other families, and whether you ever regretted doing shifts. I have 3 dc and the youngest is 7.

TIA

As the parent in the family not working shifts, I'd say the cons are:

  • Because of the fortnightly pattern, I can't commit to a class or a hobby without paying for childcare.
  • Every second weekend, I've the kids to myself with DH working 12 hour shifts.
  • I've chosen to work part-time so sometimes our days off align and we're not going 12 days before two days off together.

Pros

  • Days off during the week are a useful time to get admin done, go to the gym, do a distance learning course etc.
  • Reduce afterschool childcare bill. Although this is a tricky one because they often want you to have set days every week so you may end up paying for childcare you don't need.

It's a whole family decision I think to work shift work because it impacts everyone.
