What sort of job could DH do? (Ideally, but not exclusively WFH)

DH has worked in retail management for his entire adult life. I work in professional services and whilst I have hybrid working (2 days in the office), in practice I often need to come in for various things (and I prefer being in the office anyway).

DH would like get a job that is predominantly WFH either entirely, partially or very flexible. He has great people skills, though says he is tired of dealing with irate customers; he is natural leader but isn't bothered by taking a position that isn't leading. His technical skills are lacking a bit, he can use all the microsoft packages but I'd say at quite a basic level but I/teens can easily help him improve this. He often covers for the Compliance Manager for his region and has lots of management experience both in terms of his store and covering area/region at times.

Ideally, somewhere in a similar ball park to current salary which is £38k.

The idea really is for him to have something stable that allows him to be around at home more (his desire), but as a bonus it will increase my ability and opportunities at work which he is happy to support.

Going into a risk & compliance role would be a good option - if the company has a product/service that isn't tied to locations then that function most likely will be flex too.

Perhaps professional services at a university, if you have one nearby? Retail and customer service is very transferable to roles that are student facing and most of the universities I know have at least hybrid working.

I'd go ahead and train him up on software now though.

With a lot of companies previously heralding remote-first culture moving towards either fully in the office or hybrid, there a lot fewer remote jobs out there.

Possibly areas like telesales, customer service, IT, programming?

StColumbofNavron · 08/09/2023 17:30

I don't think it needs to be fully remote, but at the moment he obviously has to be in store and can be until 8pm. Even if it was office based with 2 days (and a full standard weekend for the first time in c. 25 years) at home I think that will be good.

We'll start getting him more tech savvy and look at what his current company have in head office compliance as that seems the most straightforward, then look at the suggestions here too.

What has he done himself to prepare for a new role? I would be so humiliated if my DH posted, ‘We’ll start by getting her a bit more….’ - he has agency.

I agree, I'd hate to be patronised like that, especially by someone I'm in a relationship with. As an apparently capable adult, can't he research his own job opportunities and make his own posts on forums? You sound like his mum/carer. I apologise if that is actually the case, your post doesn't mention any additional needs or anything.

What about civil service?. I moved from 20 years in retail, working upto store manager level and now work for the Home office, hybrid 3 days at home. Only tricky maybe the salary, he would need to be looking at HEO level as a minimum, which would mean line managing a team.

StColumbofNavron · 08/09/2023 20:36

He asked for my help. I am asking for ideas.

I think it's fine to ask on his behalf OP (as long as he knows you're posting). Most couples/families help each other out and probably get better results working as a team.

A compliance manager role in professional services would pay in above / in line.
